Synopsis
Hanamichi Sakuragi is a 189-centimeter, red-haired ex-delinquent who was turned down by fifty different girls across his three years of junior high, and grew to hate basketball after losing a girl he liked to a guy on the basketball team. After enrolling at Shohoku High School in Kanagawa, he's approached in the hallway by Haruko Akagi, who invites him to join the basketball club. Sakuragi, instantly smitten, signs up without knowing a single rule. Waiting for him are Haruko's older brother and team captain Takenori Akagi, first-year prodigy Kaede Rukawa already known nationally, and the white-haired Coach Anzai. Unable to so much as dribble or lay the ball in, Sakuragi starts from the unglamorous jobs - rebounding, defense - grinding through basic drills in a corner of the gym, and gradually gets serious about the sport. Once second-year Ryota Miyagi and third-year Hisashi Mitsui, a former middle-school MVP sidelined for years by injury, both join the team, Shohoku finally has its five. The goal is the one Akagi has repeated for three years: a national championship. The Kanagawa prefectural qualifiers for the Inter-High are stacked with powerhouses - defending champion Kainan, Ryonan with its prodigy Akira Sendoh, Shoyo led by Kenji Fujima - and Shohoku has to fight through all of them. The story follows, side by side, a total novice turning into a usable player on the court, and a single year in the lives of five players chasing a national title.

How the story is built
- Setup
From complete novice to the court
Volumes 1-7, joining the team through the Ryonan practice game
The opening plays close to a school comedy. Having joined purely for Haruko, Sakuragi clashes with his upperclassmen out of sheer ignorance, gets his head shaved, and turns his own failures into running jokes. But the story's real bones get laid down in this stretch. Sakuragi isn't handed a scoring role - he's given rebounding - and starts by learning to dribble, lay the ball up, and read where a loose ball will land. Akagi's goal of a national title, Rukawa as the wall in his own grade, and Coach Anzai's presence are all introduced here too. In a practice game against Ryonan, Sakuragi is matched against the far more advanced Akira Sendoh and Jun Uozumi, and finds out through the game itself just how much of a novice he still is. Even while the comedy dominates, almost everything the story will need later is already on the table by this point.
- Development
Five players, and the wall of the prefecture
Volumes 8-21, from Mitsui and Miyagi joining through winning the qualifiers
The story shifts from one person's growth to a team's story. Hisashi Mitsui, sidelined for years by a knee injury, shows up at the gym with a group of delinquents and, crying in front of Coach Anzai, says he wants to play basketball again - the scene that finally completes Shohoku's five. In the prefectural qualifiers, Shohoku beats Miura High and Kenji Fujima's Shoyo to reach the championship round. Against Kainan, led by Shinichi Maki and Soichiro Jin, Akagi injures his leg and has to sit out for part of the game, and Shohoku falls just short of a win. In the game against Ryonan for the last spot at the national tournament, an exhausted Mitsui and a contribution from the supposedly amateur Sakuragi mesh together, and Shohoku wins, taking second in the prefecture and a national berth. This is the stretch where the series becomes one where wins and losses turn not on individual highlights but on how well the five players fit together.
- Turn
How big the national stage is
Volumes 22-24, the Inter-High opens in Hiroshima and the Toyotama game
The setting moves from Kanagawa to the national tournament in Hiroshima, where Shohoku is treated as an unknown. Their first-round opponent is Osaka's Toyotama High. Shohoku is pushed back by Toyotama's run-and-gun offense and Nanretsu's blatant rough play, but Rukawa answers as the ace, and Sakuragi lands the jump shot he built through special training to pull the momentum back. What this stretch shows is the gap between a prefectural power and a national one, and, at the same time, that Sakuragi has become a player who can score in a proper form. Next up is Shohei Industrial from Akita, three-time defending Inter-High champion. Facing an overwhelming dynasty, Shohoku's players become underdogs, and from here the story stops tracking a run of wins and starts describing a single game in detail.
- Resolution
The forty minutes against Shohei Industrial
Volumes 25-31, the second-round Shohei Industrial game through the final chapter
A single game takes up roughly the last seven volumes. Down more than 20 points early on, Shohoku claws the gap back into single digits as Akagi battles Masashi Kawata in the post, Mitsui fires three-pointers past the point of physical exhaustion, Miyagi slips through the press, and Rukawa keeps trading one-on-ones with the country's best player, Eiji Sawakita. Sakuragi dives out of bounds chasing a loose ball, slams his back into the scorer's table, and gets hurt - but tells Coach Anzai I'm at my peak right now and goes back in. In this one game the manga spends everything it has built up: Sakuragi's rebounding, Mitsui's range, Akagi's grit, Miyagi's speed, Rukawa's growth, and Anzai's calls from the bench. In the final pages, dialogue and sound effects nearly disappear, and the result comes down in a stretch of only a few seconds.
The ending
Open the ending (it is given away in full)
In the closing minutes against Shohei Industrial, the game comes down to a single point. With under thirty seconds left, Rukawa scores to put Shohoku up by one, only for Sawakita to answer immediately, putting Shohoku back down by one. On the final possession, Rukawa draws the defense with his dribble and passes to a wide-open Sakuragi. True to the words he'd repeated in practice - left hand just supports it - Sakuragi rises for the jump shot, sinks it, and Shohoku beats the three-time champions 79-78. Afterward, Sakuragi and Rukawa, who had clashed with each other the entire series, silently walk toward one another and slap hands as hard as they can. That's the peak of the story. What follows is handled almost cruelly: the third-round game against Aichi's Aiwa Gakuin is never shown at all - the text simply says Shohoku lost badly, almost unbelievably so. Between Sakuragi's back injury and the toll the Shohei Industrial game took on everyone, the team had nothing left. Akagi's three-year goal of a national title is never achieved. After the Inter-High, third-years Takenori Akagi and Kiminobu Kogure retire, leaving Mitsui as the only third-year still aiming for the winter tournament. Ryota Miyagi becomes the new captain, and Haruko takes over as manager. Rukawa is selected for the All-Japan Junior national team. Sakuragi is at a seaside hospital doing rehab, and reads a letter from Haruko, delighted that they're now pen pals. His comeback date is never given - what comes next for Sakuragi as a player is left to the reader. The final chapter closes with the words 'End of Part One,' and the story hasn't continued as a serialized manga since. In December 2004, Takehiko Inoue used a decommissioned high school building in Kanagawa (the former Misaki High School) for a live event, drawing a chalkboard comic titled 'Ten Days After' that showed each character ten days on from the Shohei Industrial game - later collected in a book and DVD. The author has made comments suggesting he'd like to continue the story, but as of September 2026, no Part Two has begun as a serialized work.
映画『THE FIRST SLAM DUNK』との違い
Notes
Building the story around a novice
Because the hero is a complete beginner at the sport, readers learn its rules and techniques in exactly the same order he does. Sakuragi is handed rebounding and defense before he's ever asked to score, and the order in which he picks up skills - layups, then jump shots - follows the order a real player would learn them. That's the opposite of the usual shonen approach, where a flashy signature move shows up in chapter one; here, the process of turning can't-do into can-do is itself the payoff. Meanwhile, the other four starters are established from the start as players already at a certain level, and their growth is shown not as skill acquisition but as decisions under pressure or physical limits being pushed. That two-tier structure lets a first-year novice serve as the protagonist while the games themselves are drawn at the level of elite high-school basketball. Sticking so closely to the real order in which a sport is learned is widely credited with changing how sports manga got written.
Ending on Shohei Industrial
The series doesn't end with a national title. Its peak is the second-round game against Shohei Industrial, and the very next game is dismissed in a single line as a blowout loss, never drawn at all. The proportions are extreme: of 31 total volumes, roughly seven are spent on that one game. How to feel about this ending has always split readers - some see it as a story that stopped right after its best possible game, which is exactly why it stays with people; others find it unsatisfying that the third-years' goal, a national title, is never fulfilled. The words 'End of Part One' closing the final chapter have long fueled speculation about a sequel. The author himself is reported to have expressed interest in continuing even after serialization ended, and the 2004 chalkboard comic 'Ten Days After' showed only a glimpse ten days on. The way the story chose to stop has itself become part of how the work is discussed.
Cutting the sound
In the closing stretch of the Shohei Industrial game, the sequence leading to the winning shot drops almost all dialogue and sound effects, letting the art carry it alone. The high five between Sakuragi and Rukawa afterward has no words either. This silent treatment is read as stripping sound out of the story's biggest moment precisely so readers turn the pages at their own pace, changing how the passage of time feels. The same technique shows up at other emotional peaks too - Mitsui crying in front of Coach Anzai, Akagi grinding against Kawata in the post. Most shonen manga tend to lean harder into big sound effects and long dialogue exactly at their most decisive moments, which is why this series' restraint has been singled out repeatedly as an exception to that norm. That reading comes from readers and critics; no primary source has been found in which the author explains this choice himself.
Its reputation, and what it left behind
The series won the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1995, and in a 2006 Agency for Cultural Affairs survey ranking the 100 best works of Japanese media art, it placed first in the manga category. It's frequently cited by Japanese basketball players and figures in the sport as the reason they started playing. Inoue has continued to work with the sport since then, launching Real, about wheelchair basketball, in 1999. The work's staying power also shows in its 2022 film adaptation, released 26 years after serialization ended, which grossed roughly 15.7 billion yen domestically. Among later sports manga, its influence is often cited in the choice to draw a single game at great length rather than compress matches, and in being willing to include defeat as part of the ending.
How the film The First Slam Dunk differs from the manga
Released December 3, 2022, the film was directed and written by Takehiko Inoue himself, but it isn't a straight adaptation - it's the same story told from a different point of view. It covers the same game, the Shohei Industrial match from late in the manga, but its center isn't Sakuragi at all; it's Ryota Miyagi, who also gets top billing. The film interweaves the game with material never in the manga: Miyagi's upbringing in Okinawa, his childhood there, and his relationship with his older brother Sota, including Sota's death. So Miyagi's family story is something the film adds - as far as the original manga is concerned, none of that backstory is on the page. And because the film covers only the Shohei Industrial game, it doesn't include what functions as the manga's actual finale, the Aiwa Gakuin game, or Shohoku's new lineup afterward. The accurate way to think about it is as two separate works depicting the same game from two different people's perspectives.

What we could not confirm
Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.
- The exact composition and dialogue of the final chapter's last page. Multiple sources agree that it shows Sakuragi reading Haruko's letter during rehab, but whether his last line is really 'I'm a genius' could not be confirmed against a primary source
- Final scores of games other than the Shohei Industrial match. The 79-78 score for that game is consistent across multiple sources, but the scores of the Kainan, Ryonan, and Toyotama games appear only on fan sites and could not be confirmed
- The most recent print total. Shueisha's official site gives more than 120 million copies across the series as of December 2022, while the Japanese Wikipedia entry gives more than 185 million worldwide as of October 2024, though the source behind that latter figure has not been confirmed against a primary source
