Synopsis
In the year 845, humanity has lived for over a century inside three concentric walls, safe from the man-eating Titans outside. That safety ends the day a Colossal Titan and an Armored Titan tear open the outermost wall, Wall Maria, and a boy named Eren Yeager watches his mother be eaten alive. Eren swears to wipe out every Titan and, with his adopted sister Mikasa and his friend Armin, joins the Survey Corps, the only unit that ventures beyond the walls. The story opens as a siege: can humanity survive against monsters it cannot match? Everything changes once Eren himself turns out to be able to become a Titan. From there the question shifts. Where do the Titans come from? Why does humanity inside the walls know nothing of the outside world? Who engineered this isolation? Piece by piece, the series reveals that an enemy has been hiding among Eren's own comrades, that the ruling monarchy has been erasing people's memories, and that another society of humans exists beyond the walls. A story about fighting Titans becomes a story about uncovering why humanity was ever caged, and finally a story about war between nations and peoples. Eren's repeated cry for freedom runs through all of it, and what that freedom actually means keeps changing.

How the story is built
- Setup
Survival behind the walls
Volumes 1-8
In 845 the Colossal and Armored Titans breach Wall Maria and Eren loses his mother to a Titan. Assigned to Trost District after training, he is nearly killed in a Titan incursion there - and discovers he can transform into a Titan himself. From this point the story is a war of attrition: fighting with omni-directional gear, expeditions beyond the walls, and a Female Titan that guts the Survey Corps ranks, each costing lives for scraps of information. After the 57th expedition, the Female Titan is unmasked as Annie Leonhart, a fellow cadet - proof that a human can be inside a Titan. At this stage the enemy is still assumed to lie somewhere beyond the walls.
- Development
The enemy within, and the basement
Volumes 9-22
A Titan appearing inside Wall Rose exposes the Colossal and Armored Titans as two more cadets, Bertholdt and Reiner - the enemy was never outside, it was sitting at the same dinner table. The Royal Government arc that follows reveals that the crown has been erasing citizens' memories and hiding the existence of the outside world. The true royal bloodline (the Reiss family), the founding Titan, and a centuries-old vow of non-aggression made by the 145th king all come to light, and the antagonist shifts from Titans to the power structure that concealed history itself. After retaking Shiganshina, Eren finally reaches the basement his father Grisha left behind - and learns that humanity exists beyond the walls after all, and that his own people are branded devils by the rest of the world.
- Turn
The nation across the sea
Volumes 23-29
The setting jumps overseas to the military nation of Marley, and the viewpoint shifts to boys and girls training as Marleyan warriors. This is where the series fundamentally changes shape. Titans are not supernatural monsters but weapons: Marley confines the Eldian people to internment zones and conscripts them into service. Seen from the world's perspective, the people inside the walls on Paradis Island are the surviving remnant of a race of devils. Discrimination, ghettos, conscription, and great-power war move to the foreground, and the conflict is no longer humans versus monsters but people versus people. Eren, who has infiltrated Marley, attacks a national festival there, and the Yeagerist faction seizes power back on Paradis. By this point it is no longer possible to say cleanly who is the victim and who is the aggressor.
- Resolution
The Rumbling and the final battle
Volumes 30-34
Eren makes contact with his half-brother Zeke, a royal bloodline heir, and awakens the power of the Founding Titan to unleash the Rumbling - releasing the countless Colossal Titans that had lain dormant inside the walls. His goal is to crush every human being outside Paradis Island; the target is no longer an enemy nation but the world itself. The battle lines redraw once more: the survivors of the Survey Corps, including Mikasa and Armin, join forces with former enemies like Reiner, Annie, Pieck, and Gabi, and set out by airship to stop him. Hange dies covering the retreat; Levi kills Zeke. The story that began as humans fighting Titans ends with the protagonist's own friends fighting to stop the protagonist.
The ending
Open the ending (it is given away in full)
During the Rumbling, Eren becomes the towering Founding Titan and leads a horde of Colossal Titans across the continent, crushing everything in their path - in the story's own words, killing roughly eighty percent of the world's population. Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Jean, Connie, Reiner, Annie, Pieck, Gabi, Falco, and Onyankopon catch up to him by airship to stop him. Hange dies in a suicidal delaying action so the others can advance, and Levi kills Zeke. Armin, using his own Colossal Titan power, blasts open Eren's body, and Mikasa moves in and cuts off Eren's head. She holds it, kisses it, and says goodbye. Around this final confrontation, Eren and Armin talk in the Paths - the dimension that connects all Titan holders. Eren admits that he engineered the entire outcome himself, that he steered his friends into becoming the heroes who would kill him, and that he could not bear the thought of Mikasa belonging to anyone else. In the same breath he says he never really understood why he carried out the Rumbling - only that he wanted to see the world beyond the walls with his own eyes. After Eren's death, Mikasa meets the first Titan holder, Ymir Fritz, in the Paths and thanks her before letting her go. This releases Ymir from two thousand years of bondage and erases the power of the Titans entirely. Everyone who had been turned into a mindless Titan, and every holder of the Nine Titans, returns to human form, and Ymir's people are freed from the thirteen-year curse on their lives. Survivors include Mikasa, Armin, Levi, Jean, Connie, Reiner, Annie, Pieck, Gabi, Falco, Historia, and Onyankopon. Levi loses two fingers on his right hand and his right eye fighting Zeke and is left in a wheelchair. Three years later, Armin and others travel to Paradis Island as peace envoys and are welcomed by Historia. Mikasa secretly buries Eren's head beneath a large tree on a hill in Shiganshina and keeps returning to tend the grave. She eventually starts a family, lives to old age, and is buried at last with the scarf Eren once gave her. Much further into the future, Paradis Island too is consumed by war and civilization collapses. In the ruins, a boy walks with a dog past that same hill and looks up at the enormous tree standing on it. That is where the story ends. This epilogue sequence was added when the story moved from magazine serialization into the final collected volume 34; it was not part of the original magazine ending.
Notes
What the Titans actually are, and the Nine Titans
The story eventually explains that all Titan power originates from a woman named Ymir Fritz. After her death the power split into nine: the Founder, the Attack Titan, the Colossal, the Armored, the Female, the Beast, the Cart, the Jaw, and the War Hammer Titans. Every holder is doomed to die within thirteen years - a fate known as Ymir's Curse. The Founding Titan sits above all the others, able to control the bodies and memories of Ymir's people, but only someone of royal blood can actually use that power. That restriction is exactly why Eren needed his half-brother Zeke to trigger the Rumbling. The mindless Titans that roam outside the walls are simply members of Ymir's people injected with spinal fluid and stripped of their reason - meaning every monster the series began with was, originally, a person.
Ymir's people and the shape of Marley
The people living inside the walls are Eldians - Ymir's people - descendants of the side that once ruled the continent as the Eldian Empire. Marley later rose to power, seized seven of the Nine Titans, and became a superpower in its own right. In present-day Marley, Eldians are confined to internment zones as a supposed race of devils, forced to wear armbands, and either conscripted as warriors or turned into mindless Titans as punishment. When the story retells itself from Marley's side starting around volume 23, the humanity readers had been rooting for inside the walls is revealed, from the outside, to be a persecuted people with a history of atrocities of its own. This framing has repeatedly drawn comparisons to real historical persecution, and opinions on the comparison are sharply divided. That reading belongs to readers and critics; the text itself never states an explicit real-world equivalence.
The theme of freedom turns on itself
From chapter one onward, Eren talks about nothing more than freedom and his wish to go beyond the walls. In the first half, that freedom reads as a positive drive against oppression. In the second half, what waits beyond the walls turns out to be more walls - nations, ethnicities, chains of history - and Eren's pursuit of freedom ends in a genocide that strips away everyone else's freedom to live. Late in the story, Eren himself says he was bound by memories of a future he had already seen, that he had no real choice in the actions he took. Many readers take this as the character who wanted freedom most ending up the least free of anyone in the series. What the author intended as freedom's opposite is never spelled out in the text; that remains open to interpretation.
The ending the author chose to write
As a matter of plot, Eren is not redeemed - Mikasa kills him. Eighty percent of humanity does not come back to life. The power of the Titans disappears, but Paradis Island is eventually destroyed by war regardless, and the peace shown is explicitly provisional. In other words, the author declined to resolve the tragedy or to grant a stable peace. The ending sparked strong reactions both in Japan and abroad; multiple outlets reported that overseas fans launched a petition asking for the finale to be rewritten. The most common objections concerned how Eren's motives were explained, how his attachment to Mikasa was portrayed, and how thin the postwar peace looked. Defenders argued that a story about a cycle of violence should not end with that cycle cleanly broken - that the unresolved ending is faithful to the theme. All of this remains reader and critical interpretation, not something the text argues for itself.
Planted from chapter one
The title of chapter one is To You, 2000 Years From Now, and roughly two thousand years have passed in-story since Ymir Fritz first gained her power. In that same chapter, Eren wakes up crying from a long dream he cannot remember. That scene is later tied back to chapter 138 and the finale near the end of the series. The scarf Mikasa is given around the same time in chapter one also returns in the final chapter, kept at Eren's grave until her own death. It is widely read that the opening chapter was built from fragments of the story's final scenes, but the text never states this connection outright - the exact mechanism stays a matter of interpretation.
