忍の里が並び立つ世界。木ノ葉隠れの里は十数年前に九尾の妖狐に襲われ、四代目火影が自らの命と引き換えに、その妖狐を生まれたばかりの赤子の腹へ封じた。その赤子がうずまきナルトである。両親を知らず、里の大人からは化け物を抱えた子として遠巻きにされ、悪戯で気を引くことしかできない落ちこぼれとして育った。それでも彼は、里の頭である火影になって全員に自分を認めさせる、と言い続ける。忍者アカデミーを卒業したナルトは、一族を皆殺しにされた過去を持つうちはサスケ、成績は良いが実戦を知らない春野サクラ、担当上忍のはたけカカシとともに第七班へ配属される。橋の建設をめぐる波の国での任務、各里の下忍が集まる中忍試験、里を狙う抜け忍・大蛇丸の襲撃。任務のたびに、忍とは何をする者かという問いが形を変えて突きつけられる。ナルトの前に立つ敵の多くは、彼と同じように孤独に育ち、そこで別の答えを選んだ者たちである。力を持つ者が力の使い道をどう決めるか、憎しみを受け取った者がそれを次の誰かへ渡すかどうか。全72巻700話は、その一点を世代をまたいで問い直し続ける物語である。

Synopsis

In a world of rival ninja villages, the Hidden Leaf was attacked years ago by a nine-tailed fox spirit, and the Fourth Hokage sealed the beast into a newborn baby at the cost of his own life. That baby is Naruto Uzumaki. Raised without parents, kept at arm's length by adults who saw only the monster he carried, he grew up as the class troublemaker who could only get attention through pranks. Even so, he never stopped saying he would become Hokage, the village's leader, and make everyone acknowledge him. After graduating from the ninja academy, Naruto is placed on Team 7 with Sasuke Uchiha, sole survivor of a clan wiped out in a single night, Sakura Haruno, a strong student with no combat experience, and their jonin instructor Kakashi Hatake. A bridge-building mission in the Land of Waves, the Chunin Exams that draw genin from every village, an attack on the Leaf by the missing-nin Orochimaru - each assignment reframes the same question in a new shape: what does it mean to be a ninja? Many of the people who stand against Naruto were raised in the same kind of isolation he was, and simply landed on a different answer. Whether someone with power decides how to use it, and whether a person who has been handed hatred passes it on to someone else - the full 72 volumes and 700 chapters keep returning to that single point across generations.

アカデミーを卒業したナルトは、サスケ、サクラとともにカカシ班に入る。最初の本格的な任務である波の国編で、抜け忍・桃地再不斬と、道具として育てられた少年・白に出会う。ここで示されるのは、忍とは雇われて人を殺す職業であり、負けた側には何も残らないという世界の冷たさである。続く中忍試験編では、各里の下忍が集まる試験の形をとりながら、砂隠れの人柱力・我愛羅というナルトの合わせ鏡が置かれる。同じく里に恐れられて育ち、他人を殺すことでしか自分の存在を確かめられなくなった少年である。この段階の話は、修行と試合が続く王道の少年漫画の体裁を保っている。ただし敵役には必ず生い立ちが用意され、勝敗とは別に、その人物がどこで道を選び損ねたかが描かれる書き方が、最初から一貫している。

13〜27巻（木ノ葉崩し編〜サスケ奪還編、第一部完）
中忍試験の最中、大蛇丸が砂隠れと結んで木ノ葉を襲う。三代目火影は大蛇丸と刺し違えて死に、里は多数の死者を出す。後任として五代目火影に綱手が立ち、ナルトは伝説の三忍のひとり自来也に弟子入りする。一方サスケは、兄うちはイタチとの再会で自分の弱さを突きつけられ、力を与えると囁く大蛇丸のもとへ走る。ナルトたち下忍だけで編成された奪還班は追撃に失敗し、ナルトとサスケは終末の谷で正面から戦って、ナルトが敗れる。第一部はここで終わる。主人公が友を連れ戻せず、仲間を欠いたまま里を出て修行に向かうという、勝利の形をしていない区切りである。学園的な成長譚として始まった話は、この時点で、離れていった相手をどう扱うかという問いに置き換わっている。

憎しみの連鎖を止める
28〜54巻（第二部・暁編・ペイン編・五影会談編）
2年半の修行を終えたナルトが帰還すると、尾獣を宿す人柱力を狩る組織・暁が動き出している。我愛羅が連れ去られ、自来也は雨隠れでペインに殺される。サスケは大蛇丸を倒して独立し、イタチを討つが、直後に、うちは一族の虐殺はイタチが里の命令を引き受けたものであり、弟だけを生かすための行為だったと知らされる。討つべき相手が犠牲者だったという反転が、この作品でもっとも強く出る場面である。サスケはこれを機に里そのものを敵と定める。ペイン編では木ノ葉が壊滅させられるが、ナルトは長門と言葉で向き合い、報復を選ばずに相手の考えを変えさせる。長門は住民を蘇生させて死ぬ。ここで主人公の武器が拳から対話へ移り、話は個人の因縁から、五影会談を経て世界規模の戦争へ広がっていく。

第四次忍界大戦
55〜72巻（忍界大戦編）
五大国と鉄の国は忍連合軍を組み、うちはマダラを名乗る仮面の男と暁に対する。敵は穢土転生で死者を戦力化し、白ゼツの分身を大量投入する。連合軍側は物量と情報戦で持ちこたえ、ナルトは自分の内側の九尾と和解して尾獣たちと共闘する。日向ネジがナルトとヒナタをかばって死に、仮面の男の正体がカカシのかつての同期・うちはオビトだと判明する。オビトは十尾の人柱力となるが、ナルトとの問答の末に寝返る。次に本物のマダラが復活し、月の眼計画を進めるが、その体は黒ゼツに乗っ取られる。黒ゼツはうちはの歴史そのものを操ってきた存在で、目的は忍の祖・大筒木カグヤの復活だった。敵は人間ですらなくなり、戦争は世界の起源をめぐる話へ変わる。そしてすべてが終わったあと、残るのはナルトとサスケの決着だけになる。

Fresh out of the academy, Naruto joins Sasuke and Sakura on Kakashi's team. Their first real mission, the Land of Waves arc, brings them up against the missing-nin Zabuza Momochi and Haku, a boy raised to be used as a tool. It's here the series shows its cold side: shinobi are hired killers, and the losing side is left with nothing. The Chunin Exams that follow bring genin from every village together, and place beside Naruto his mirror image: Gaara of the Sand, a jinchuriki like Naruto himself, feared by his own village, who has come to confirm his own existence only by killing others. This stretch still wears the shape of a conventional shonen story built on training and tournaments. But every antagonist comes with a backstory, and from the very start the series makes a point of showing, apart from who wins, exactly where that person's path went wrong.
Development
The village breaks, the team splits
Volumes 13-27 (Konoha Crush arc through the Sasuke Retrieval arc, end of Part I)
Mid-exam, Orochimaru allies with the Sand and attacks the Leaf. The Third Hokage dies taking Orochimaru down with him, and the village suffers heavy losses. Tsunade becomes the Fifth Hokage, and Naruto apprentices himself to Jiraiya, one of the legendary Sannin. Sasuke, meanwhile, is confronted with his own weakness when he crosses paths again with his brother Itachi Uchiha, and defects to Orochimaru, who promises him power. A retrieval squad made entirely of genin fails to bring him back; Naruto and Sasuke fight head-on at the Valley of the End, and Naruto loses. Part I ends there - the hero unable to bring his friend home, leaving the village for training a man short. What began as a coming-of-age school story has, by this point, turned into a question of how to deal with the people who walk away.

Breaking the chain of hatred
Volumes 28-54 (Part II, Akatsuki arc, Pain's Assault, Kage Summit arc)
Naruto returns from two and a half years of training to find Akatsuki, an organization hunting the jinchuriki who carry the tailed beasts, already on the move. Gaara is abducted, and Jiraiya is killed by Pain in the Hidden Rain. Sasuke defeats Orochimaru and strikes out on his own, then kills Itachi - only to learn immediately afterward that the Uchiha massacre had been carried out by Itachi under the village's own orders, purely to spare his little brother. That reversal, the man he killed for revenge turning out to be the greater victim, is the sharpest turn the series makes. Sasuke responds by naming the village itself his enemy. Pain levels the Leaf, but Naruto confronts him with words rather than force and talks him out of retaliation; Pain revives everyone he killed and dies. From here the protagonist's chief weapon shifts from fists to dialogue, and the story widens from personal grudges to, via the Five Kage Summit, a war on a global scale.

The Fourth Shinobi World War
Volumes 55-72 (Fourth Shinobi World War arc)
The five great nations and the Land of Iron form a shinobi alliance against Akatsuki and a masked man calling himself Uchiha Madara. The enemy raises the dead as soldiers through Impure World Reincarnation and floods the field with clones of White Zetsu. The alliance holds on through sheer numbers and intelligence work, while Naruto makes peace with the Nine-Tails inside him and fights alongside the tailed beasts. Neji Hyuga dies shielding Naruto and Hinata, and the masked man is revealed to be Obito Uchiha, once Kakashi's teammate. Obito becomes host to the Ten-Tails, but after a long exchange with Naruto, switches sides. Then the real Madara is revived and moves to complete his Eye of the Moon Plan - only for his body to be hijacked by Black Zetsu, who has been steering Uchiha history all along toward one goal: reviving the progenitor of chakra itself, Kaguya Otsutsuki. The enemy is no longer even human, and the war becomes a story about the origin of the world. Once it's over, all that's left is the reckoning between Naruto and Sasuke.

最終回は2014年11月10日発売の週刊少年ジャンプ50号に、第699話「和解の印」と第700話「うずまきナルト!!」を同時掲載する形で載った。最終話は24ページ全編カラーである。まず大戦の決着。十尾の人柱力となったうちはオビトはナルトとの問答を経て寝返り、カカシをかばって死ぬ。復活したうちはマダラは圧倒的な力を見せるが、その体は黒ゼツに乗っ取られ、忍の祖である大筒木カグヤを甦らせる器として使われる。うちはの歴史そのものが黒ゼツの仕込みだったと明かされ、最後の敵は人間ではなくなる。六道仙人の力を受けたナルトとサスケは、六道・地爆天星でカグヤと黒ゼツを新しい月の中へ封じ、マダラは死ぬ。だが戦争が終わっても話は終わらない。サスケは、五影も尾獣もすべて自分が抱え込み、外から憎まれる存在になることで忍の世界を作り直すと言い出す。ナルトはそれを認めず、二人は第一部と同じ終末の谷で戦う。第699話でナルトは右腕を、サスケは左腕を失い、動けないまま並んで倒れる。そこでサスケが負けを認めて謝り、輪廻眼で無限月読を解除する。長きにわたる戦いはここで終わる。サスケは罪を認めて里を離れ、贖罪の旅に出る。はたけカカシが六代目火影に就く。第700話は、それから十数年後の木ノ葉である。里は復興して近代的な街になっており、うずまきナルトは七代目火影として執務室にいる。ナルトは日向ヒナタと結婚し、息子のボルトと娘のヒマワリがいる。サスケは春野サクラと結婚し、娘のサラダがいる。ほかにシカマルとテマリの子シカダイ、サイといのの子いのじん、チョウジとカルイの子チョウチョウらが登場し、第七班の三人が親の世代になったところで幕が下りる。ナルトがかつて火影岩に落書きして注目を集めたのと同じことを、息子のボルトがやっている。忍の世界が消える結末ではない。里も忍も残り、次の世代がまた同じ場所から始まる。なお第699話と第700話の間、大戦から2年後を描くのが劇場版『THE LAST -NARUTO THE MOVIE-』（2014年12月6日公開）で、作者はこれを699.5話にあたる話だと説明している。

The finale ran in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 50, on sale November 10, 2014, pairing chapter 699 ('Mark of Reconciliation') with chapter 700 ('Uzumaki Naruto!!') - the last chapter printed in full color across all 24 pages. The war is settled first. Obito Uchiha, host to the Ten-Tails, switches sides after a final exchange with Naruto and dies shielding Kakashi. The revived Madara Uchiha shows overwhelming power, but his body has already been taken over by Black Zetsu and used as a vessel to revive Kaguya Otsutsuki, progenitor of the shinobi. All of Uchiha history turns out to have been Black Zetsu's design from the start, and the final enemy is no longer human at all. Empowered by Sage of Six Paths chakra, Naruto and Sasuke use a technique called Six Paths - Chibaku Tensei to seal Kaguya and Black Zetsu inside a newly formed moon, and Madara dies. But the story doesn't end with the war. Sasuke announces he intends to remake the shinobi world by taking on the hatred of the other Kage and the tailed beasts himself, becoming an enemy to everyone from the outside. Naruto refuses to accept that, and the two fight it out again at the same Valley of the End where they once fought as boys. In chapter 699, Naruto loses his right arm and Sasuke his left; unable to move, they lie side by side. Sasuke admits defeat and apologizes, then uses his Rinnegan to undo Infinite Tsukuyomi. The long war between them ends there. Sasuke accepts responsibility for his crimes and leaves the village on a journey of atonement. Kakashi Hatake becomes the Sixth Hokage. Chapter 700 jumps ahead more than a decade to a rebuilt, modernized Leaf Village. Naruto Uzumaki sits in the Hokage's office as the Seventh Hokage. He is married to Hinata Hyuga, and they have a son, Boruto, and a daughter, Himawari. Sasuke has married Sakura Haruno, and they have a daughter, Sarada. Also shown are Shikadai (son of Shikamaru and Temari), Inojin (son of Sai and Ino), and Chocho (daughter of Choji and Karui) - the story closes with the three members of the original Team 7 now parents to the next generation. Boruto is caught doing the same thing Naruto once did to get attention: defacing the Hokage Monument. The world of shinobi doesn't disappear at the end; the village and the ninja way both remain, and the next generation starts again from the same place. Between chapters 699 and 700, the film The Last: Naruto the Movie (released December 6, 2014) depicts the two years after the war; the author has described it as, in effect, chapter 699.5.

解説

チャクラという一枚の土台

作中の忍術は、体力と精神力を練り合わせたチャクラを、印を結んで放出する技として説明される。火・風・雷・土・水の性質変化があり、一族に受け継がれる血継限界として写輪眼や白眼のような瞳術が置かれる。もう一段上に、尾の数で格付けされた尾獣と、それを体内に封じられた人柱力がある。ナルトが九尾の人柱力であることは、彼が里で疎まれた理由であると同時に、後半で世界規模の戦争の焦点になる。この設定の面白いところは、後半でチャクラそのものの起源へ話が遡り、忍術が人間の発明ではなく大筒木カグヤに由来する外来のものだったと書き換えられる点にある。土台を最後にひっくり返す構造で、序盤の里同士の争いが、より大きな枠の中の内輪もめだったと位置づけ直される。

説得が必殺技になる

この作品の主人公が敵を制する手段は、しばしば戦闘ではなく言葉である。我愛羅、長門、オビトと、要所の敵は倒されるのではなく考えを変えて味方側へ戻ってくる。相手の生い立ちを聞き、そこに自分の孤独を重ね、報復ではない道を提示する。憎しみを受け取った者がそれを次へ渡さないことが、この作品の言う忍のあり方として繰り返し示される。ただしその方法は最後まで通らない。うちはサスケにだけは通じず、拳で決着をつけるほかなかった。作者の岸本斉史は連載終了後のインタビューで、細部を決める前から、ナルトとサスケが戦って終わることだけは最初に決めていたと語っている。対話で世界を変えた主人公が、最後の一人には殴り合いを要したという形が、この物語の骨格になっている。

悪役が犠牲者に反転する書き方

序盤の白から、大蛇丸、我愛羅、長門、イタチ、オビト、マダラに至るまで、敵役にはほぼ例外なく、そこへ至った経緯が用意されている。中でも決定的なのがうちはイタチで、一族を皆殺しにした最悪の裏切り者として提示された人物が、実は里の命令を引き受け、弟だけを生かすために憎まれ役を演じていたと明かされる。読者が抱いた嫌悪ごと、前提が裏返される。この反転はサスケの動機を敵討ちから里への復讐へ組み替え、物語の後半を丸ごと動かす。組織の判断が個人に押しつけられ、その個人が悪名だけを引き受けるという構図は他の敵にも繰り返される。最終的には、悪は個人ではなく憎しみが受け渡される仕組みの側にあり、それを断つのが忍のあり方だという主題に集約されると読まれている。

結末の受け取られ方

最終話については、事実として賛否が並んだ。争点の一つは恋愛関係の決着で、ナルトと日向ヒナタ、サスケと春野サクラという組み合わせが最終話で示されたことに対し、それまでの描写と食い違うという声が出た。岸本斉史自身、インタビューでナルトとサクラがくっつくように意図的にミスリードさせていたと述べている。もう一つは第四次忍界大戦の長さで、55巻前後から最終巻近くまで一つの戦いが続く構成を、密度が薄いと受け取る見方がある。一方で、主人公が里に認められて火影になり、次の世代へ引き継ぐという着地は、序盤から掲げられた目標をそのまま果たしたものであり、少年漫画の宣言と回収として素直だという評価もある。どちらの読みも作品外の評価であり、作中に答えが書かれているわけではない。

終わったあとに続いたもの

完結と同時に新編の短期集中連載が予告され、2015年に外伝『七代目火影と緋色の花つ月』全10話が週刊少年ジャンプに載った。サスケとサクラの娘・うちはサラダが自分の出生を疑い、父を探す話である。続編にあたる『BORUTO -ボルト- -NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS-』は2016年に週刊少年ジャンプで月1連載として始まり、2019年7月発売のVジャンプ9月号から同誌へ移籍した。作画は池本幹雄で、岸本斉史は原作・監修として関わる。つまりナルトの物語は第700話で閉じているが、木ノ葉の時間はその先へ延びている。本編の結末を読むうえでは、第700話が本編の終着点であり、続編は別の作品として立っていると押さえておくのがよい。

Notes

One foundation called chakra

The ninjutsu in this series is explained as techniques that draw on chakra, a blend of physical and spiritual energy, released through hand seals. There are five elemental natures - fire, wind, lightning, earth, water - and clan bloodline traits like the Sharingan and Byakugan sit a level above those. Above that again are the tailed beasts, ranked by their number of tails, and the jinchuriki who carry them sealed inside their bodies. That Naruto carries the Nine-Tails is both the reason the village feared him growing up and, in the second half, the fact that puts him at the center of a world war. What makes the setup interesting is that the second half traces chakra itself back to its origin and rewrites the premise: ninjutsu wasn't a human invention at all, but something that arrived with Kaguya Otsutsuki from outside. Pulling the rug out from under its own foundation this late reframes the village-versus-village conflicts of the early volumes as, in hindsight, infighting inside a much larger picture.

Persuasion as a finishing move

The way this hero defeats his enemies is often not combat but words. Gaara, Pain, and Obito - key antagonists at each turning point aren't so much beaten as talked into changing their minds and coming back over to Naruto's side. He listens to their history, sees his own loneliness reflected in it, and offers a road that isn't retaliation. Not passing hatred on to the next person is presented, again and again, as what the series means by the ninja way. But that method doesn't work all the way to the end - it never reaches Sasuke Uchiha, and the only way to settle things with him is with fists. In an interview after the series ended, Kishimoto said that even before he had worked out the details, the one thing he had decided from the start was that Naruto and Sasuke would end the story fighting each other. A hero who changed the world through dialogue needing a straight fistfight for the very last person forms the backbone of the whole story.

The trick of turning villains into victims

From Haku early on, through Orochimaru, Gaara, Pain, Itachi, Obito, and Madara, almost every antagonist is given the circumstances that led them there. The most decisive case is Itachi Uchiha: introduced as the worst kind of traitor, the man who slaughtered his own clan, he's later revealed to have carried out the massacre under the village's orders, solely to keep his younger brother alive - taking on the role of the villain everyone would hate. The reveal flips the premise along with whatever revulsion the reader had already formed. It also recasts Sasuke's motive, from avenging his family to taking revenge on the village itself, and drives the entire second half of the story. The pattern - an organization's decision offloaded onto an individual, who alone bears the infamy for it - repeats with other enemies too. In the end, the series is often read as locating evil not in individuals but in the mechanism by which hatred gets passed along, and defining the ninja way as the thing that cuts that chain.

How the ending was received

The finale drew a genuinely mixed response. One point of contention was the romantic pairings: Naruto ending up with Hinata Hyuga and Sasuke with Sakura Haruno struck some readers as inconsistent with how those relationships had been portrayed up to that point. Kishimoto himself has said in interviews that he deliberately misled readers into expecting Naruto and Sakura to end up together. Another point was the length of the Fourth Shinobi World War - a single battle that runs from around volume 55 nearly to the final volume, which some readers found thinly stretched. On the other hand, the ending where the hero is finally acknowledged by the village and becomes Hokage, then hands the story to the next generation, is also seen as a straightforward payoff of the goal the series announced at the very start - a clean fulfillment of a shonen manga's opening promise. Both readings are opinions formed outside the text; the manga itself doesn't settle the question.

What continued after the ending

A short follow-up series was announced alongside the finale, and in 2015 Weekly Shonen Jump ran the ten-chapter spin-off Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, about Sarada Uchiha, daughter of Sasuke and Sakura, doubting her own parentage and setting out to find her father. The proper sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2016 as a once-a-month series, and moved to V Jump starting with the September 2019 issue (on sale July 2019). It's drawn by Mikio Ikemoto, with Kishimoto credited as original creator and supervisor. In other words, Naruto's own story closes at chapter 700, even though the timeline of the Leaf Village keeps going afterward. For purposes of the main story's ending, chapter 700 is the finish line, and everything after it stands as a separate work.
