大正時代。炭を焼いて売り、母と弟妹を養う少年・竈門炭治郎は、町へ泊まった翌朝に家へ戻り、家族が鬼に皆殺しにされているのを見つける。ただ一人息のあった妹・禰豆子は、鬼に変えられていた。禰豆子は兄に襲いかかりながらも人を喰わずに踏みとどまり、炭治郎は妹を人間に戻す方法を探すため、鬼を狩る組織・鬼殺隊の門を叩く。 育手・鱗滝左近次のもとで水の呼吸を仕込まれ、二年の修行と最終選別を生き延びた炭治郎は、任務の途中の浅草で、すべての鬼の始祖である鬼舞辻無惨と鉢合わせする。無惨は自分の血を分け与えて鬼を増やし、そのうち強い十二体を十二鬼月として従えていた。炭治郎は同期の我妻善逸・嘴平伊之助とともに任務を重ね、鬼殺隊の最高位である九人の柱と関わっていく。 戦いのなかで炭治郎は、父が舞っていたヒノカミ神楽が呼吸の技であること、自分の耳飾りが無惨にとって特別な意味を持つことを知る。一方の禰豆子は日光を克服し、無惨が数百年探し続けた存在になる。禰豆子を奪おうとする無惨と、無惨を滅ぼそうとする鬼殺隊は、一夜で決着する総力戦へ向かっていく。

Synopsis

Taisho-era Japan. Tanjiro Kamado sells charcoal to support his mother and siblings. Coming home the morning after staying overnight in town, he finds his family slaughtered by a demon. Only his sister Nezuko is still breathing, and she's been turned into a demon herself. She lunges at her brother but stops short of eating a human, and Tanjiro sets out to find a way to turn her back, joining the Demon Slayer Corps, the order that hunts demons. Trained in Water Breathing by his mentor Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro survives two years of training and the Final Selection exam. On a mission in Asakusa he runs into Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor of every demon, who spreads demons by sharing his own blood and commands twelve of the strongest as the Twelve Kizuki. Alongside fellow new recruits Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira, Tanjiro takes on mission after mission and crosses paths with the Corps' elite nine Hashira. Along the way he learns that his father's Hinokami Kagura dance is actually a Breathing technique, and that his earring carries special meaning to Muzan. Nezuko, meanwhile, overcomes her vulnerability to sunlight and becomes the very thing Muzan has spent centuries searching for. Muzan closing in to reclaim her, and the Corps closing in to destroy him, drive the story toward an all-out battle that plays out over a single night.

    冒頭で竈門家は鬼に襲われ、炭治郎は鬼に変わった妹・禰豆子だけを連れて山を下りる。水柱・冨岡義勇に妹を斬られかけたところから物語が動き出し、炭治郎は育手・鱗滝左近次のもとで二年鍛え、最終選別を生き延びて鬼殺隊士になる。ここまでは妹を人間に戻すという私的な目的の話だが、浅草で鬼舞辻無惨と鉢合わせしたことで、敵にはじめて顔と名前がつく。那田蜘蛛山では十二鬼月の下弦の伍と、それを一瞬で斬る柱の力量を同時に目の当たりにし、炭治郎は自分と組織の間にある実力差を知る。善逸・伊之助という同期が加わり、単独の復讐譚から集団戦の話へ移り変わる区間。

    7〜14巻／無限列車編から刀鍛冶の里編

    炎柱・煉獄杏寿郎が上弦の参・猗窩座に敗れて死ぬ無限列車編を境に、物語の負荷が跳ね上がる。柱一人では上弦に届かないと示され、以降は複数人がかりで一体を倒す形が定着する。遊郭編では音柱・宇髄天元と炭治郎たちが上弦の陸・堕姫と妓夫太郎の首を同時に落とし、宇髄は左手と左目を失って引退する。刀鍛冶の里編では上弦の伍・玉壺と上弦の肆・半天狗が倒れ、ここで痣という切り札が現れる。同時に、鬼にも人間だった過去があることが回想で繰り返し描かれ、禰豆子が日光を克服して無惨の探し物そのものになる。物語の焦点が、妹を治すことから無惨を滅ぼすことへ移る。

    15〜16巻／柱稽古編から無限城への落下

    刀鍛冶の里の戦いで痣の発現条件が判明し、柱たちは全員が痣を出すための合同稽古を始める。痣は寿命と引き換えで、痣を出した者は二十五歳を超えて生きられないことが語られ、勝っても未来がないという条件が隊全体に共有される。稽古が進むなか、無惨は居場所を隠し続けてきた鬼殺隊当主・産屋敷耀哉の屋敷を自ら突き止め、深夜に本人の前へ現れる。ここで物語は探索と成長の段階を打ち切り、一夜で決着する総力戦へ入る。耀哉の自爆と、そこに潜んでいた鬼医者・珠世の薬という二段構えの罠が無惨を傷つけ、無惨は上弦の肆・鳴女の血鬼術で隊士全員を無限城へ落とす。舞台も時間も一気に閉じられる。

    無限城のなかで、鬼殺隊は上弦の壱・弐・参と同時並行で戦う。柱が死に、隊士が死に、そのたびに相手の鬼が人間だった頃の記憶が差し込まれる構成が最後まで続く。上弦を片付けた隊士たちは地上に出て無惨を囲み、朝日が昇るまで持ちこたえる持久戦に入る。ここでの勝ち筋は必殺技ではなく、珠世の薬による老化と、日が昇るまでの時間を稼ぐことに置かれている。無惨が滅びたあとにもう一段の危機が用意され、そこを越えたところで戦いが終わる。最終話は時代を現代まで飛ばし、生き残った者たちの子孫が鬼のいない日常を過ごす場面で閉じられる。

  1. Setup

    The night the siblings meet a demon

    Vols. 1-6 / the Final Selection through the Mt. Natagumo arc

    The story opens with the Kamado family's slaughter; Tanjiro comes down the mountain with only Nezuko, now turned into a demon, in tow. Things start moving when Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka nearly cuts her down on sight. Tanjiro trains for two years under Sakonji Urokodaki and survives the Final Selection to become a Demon Slayer. Up to this point it's a personal quest to cure his sister, until running into Muzan Kibutsuji in Asakusa gives the enemy, for the first time, a face and a name. At Mt. Natagumo, Tanjiro sees both a Lower Rank of the Twelve Kizuki and a Hashira who cuts it down in an instant, and realizes exactly how far he still has to go. With Zenitsu and Inosuke now part of the cast, the story shifts from a solo revenge quest to a story about a group.

    Hashira and Upper Ranks

    Vols. 7-14 / the Mugen Train arc through the Swordsmith Village arc

    The Mugen Train arc, where Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku dies to Upper Rank Three Akaza, raises the stakes sharply: a single Hashira isn't enough to beat an Upper Rank, and from here it becomes standard for several fighters to take one down together. In the Red-Light District arc, Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui and Tanjiro's group take the heads of Upper Rank Six, Daki and Gyutaro, at the same moment; Uzui loses his left hand and eye and retires. In the Swordsmith Village arc, Upper Rank Five Gyokko and Upper Rank Four Hantengu both fall, and Demon Marks -- the story's next trump card -- appear for the first time. Flashbacks keep showing that demons had human lives too, and Nezuko overcoming sunlight turns her into the very thing Muzan is searching for. The story's center of gravity shifts from curing Nezuko to destroying Muzan.

  3. Turn

    The all-out war begins

    Vols. 15-16 / the Hashira Training arc through the fall into the Infinity Castle

    The Swordsmith Village battle reveals the conditions for triggering a Demon Mark, and the Hashira begin training together to bring theirs out. A Mark trades away a normal lifespan -- anyone who manifests one won't live past twenty-five -- so the whole Corps now knows that winning comes with no future attached. Mid-training, Muzan tracks down the hidden estate of Corps leader Kagaya Ubuyashiki and appears before him in the dead of night. Here the story cuts off its exploration-and-growth phase and enters an all-out battle resolved in a single night. A two-stage trap -- Kagaya's self-detonation and a drug from demon physician Tamayo -- wounds Muzan, who retaliates by using Upper Rank Four Nakime's Blood Demon Art to drop every Corps member into the Infinity Castle at once, collapsing both setting and timeframe.

  4. Resolution

    One night, until dawn

    Vols. 16-23 / the Infinity Castle arc

    Inside the Infinity Castle, the Corps fights Upper Ranks One, Two, and Three in parallel. Hashira die, rank-and-file die, and every time, a flashback shows the demon they're facing as a person, before. Once the Upper Ranks are dealt with, the survivors climb to the surface, surround Muzan, and settle into an endurance fight to hold him until sunrise. The winning move here isn't a finishing blow -- it's Tamayo's drug aging him down and simply running out the clock until daylight. One more crisis is waiting even after Muzan falls, and only past that does the fighting actually end. The final chapter jumps to the present day, closing on the descendants of the survivors living ordinary, demon-free lives.

無惨は鬼殺隊当主・産屋敷耀哉の屋敷を突き止め、深夜に本人の前へ現れる。死に瀕していた耀哉は自らを爆破して手傷を負わせ、その場に潜んでいた鬼医者・珠世が、鬼を人間に戻す薬を無惨に打ち込む。珠世は取り込まれて死ぬが、薬は無惨の体を崩し始める。無惨は鳴女の血鬼術で鬼殺隊全員を無限城へ落とし、総力戦が始まる。 無限城では、蟲柱・胡蝶しのぶが自分の体に仕込んだ藤の毒ごと上弦の弐・童磨に喰われ、その毒で弱った童磨を栗花落カナヲと嘴平伊之助が討つ。上弦の壱・黒死牟には時透無一郎・不死川玄弥・不死川実弥・悲鳴嶼行冥が挑み、痣と赫刀を発現させて倒すが、無一郎と玄弥は死ぬ。炭治郎と水柱・冨岡義勇は上弦の参・猗窩座を追い詰め、猗窩座は人間だった頃の記憶を取り戻して自ら消滅する。 地上へ出た隊士たちは無惨を囲み、夜明けまで持ちこたえる持久戦に入る。珠世の薬による老化と、炭治郎が血の記憶からたどり着いた日の呼吸の十三番目の型が効き、無惨は昇ってきた朝日に焼かれて滅びる。 しかし無惨は消える間際、自分の血のすべてを炭治郎に注ぎ込み、日光を克服した鬼の王に変えてしまう。鬼と化した炭治郎は仲間に襲いかかるが、カナヲが撃ち込んだ薬と、駆けつけた禰豆子や善逸の呼びかけによって人間に戻る。無惨の死とともに、その血から生まれた鬼はすべて滅び、鬼殺隊は解散する。 戦いのあと、甘露寺蜜璃と伊黒小芭内は傷が元で死に、悲鳴嶼行冥も息を引き取る。最後まで戦って生き残った柱は冨岡義勇と不死川実弥だけになる。炭治郎と禰豆子は家へ帰り、炭治郎はカナヲと、禰豆子は善逸と、伊之助は神崎アオイと結ばれる。 最終話「幾星霜を煌めく命」は時代を現代の東京まで飛ばす。炭治郎とカナヲの子孫の竈門炭彦とカナタ、善逸と禰豆子の子孫の我妻善照と燈子、伊之助とアオイの子孫で植物学者の嘴平青葉らが、鬼のいない日常を生きている。青葉は無惨が数百年探し続けた青い彼岸花を見つけるが、それは一年に二、三日だけ昼間の数分しか咲かない花で、夜しか動けない鬼には見つけようがなかったと明かされる。産屋敷輝利哉は日本一の長寿として生き、鬼のままの愈史郎は画家になっている。

The ending

Muzan tracks down the estate of Corps leader Kagaya Ubuyashiki and appears before him at night. Kagaya, already dying, detonates himself to wound Muzan, and Tamayo, the demon physician hidden nearby, injects Muzan with a drug that turns demons back into humans. Tamayo is absorbed and dies, but the drug starts breaking Muzan's body down. Muzan uses Upper Rank Four Nakime's Blood Demon Art to drop the entire Corps into the Infinity Castle, and the all-out battle begins. Inside the Castle, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho lets herself be eaten by Upper Rank Two Doma along with the wisteria poison she'd loaded into her own body; weakened by that poison, Doma is finished off by Kanao Tsuyuri and Inosuke Hashibira. Upper Rank One Kokushibo is challenged by Muichiro Tokito, Genya Shinazugawa, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Gyomei Himejima, who bring out Demon Marks and blood-red blades to defeat him, but Muichiro and Genya both die. Tanjiro and Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka corner Upper Rank Three Akaza; Akaza recovers his human memories and dissolves himself. The survivors reach the surface, surround Muzan, and settle into an endurance fight to hold out until dawn. Between Tamayo's aging drug and the thirteenth form of Sun Breathing, which Tanjiro reaches through inherited blood memory, Muzan is finally burned apart by the rising sun. But as he disappears, Muzan pours every drop of his blood into Tanjiro, turning him into a sunlight-proof demon king. Tanjiro, now a demon, attacks his own friends, and is brought back to human by a drug Kanao injects along with Nezuko and Zenitsu's calls to him. With Muzan's death, every demon born from his blood dies with him, and the Demon Slayer Corps disbands. After the battle, Mitsuri Kanroji and Obanai Iguro die of their wounds, and Gyomei Himejima also passes away. Giyu Tomioka and Sanemi Shinazugawa are the only Hashira left alive who fought to the end. Tanjiro and Nezuko go home; Tanjiro ends up with Kanao, Nezuko with Zenitsu, and Inosuke with Aoi Kanzaki. The final chapter, 'Life Shining Across the Years,' jumps forward to present-day Tokyo. Tanjiro and Kanao's descendants Sumihiko Kamado and Kanata, Zenitsu and Nezuko's descendants Zenshou Agatsuma and Touko, and Inosuke and Aoi's descendant, botanist Aoba Hashibira, are living ordinary lives with no demons left in them. Aoba finds the blue spider lily Muzan spent centuries searching for, revealed to bloom for only a few minutes of daylight, on two or three days a year, which is exactly why a demon, active only at night, could never have found it. Kagaya's son Kiriya Ubuyashiki lives to become the longest-lived person in Japan, and Yushiro, still a demon, becomes a painter.

解説

鬼にも人間だった時間がある

作中では、倒された鬼のほとんどに人間だった頃の回想が付く。飢えていた者、病んでいた者、家族に捨てられた者。炭治郎は首を落とした鬼に手を合わせ、可哀想にと口にする。これは主人公の性格描写であると同時に、この作品の敵の設計そのものでもある。鬼は滅ぼすべき存在だが、鬼になった経緯には同情の余地がある、という二重の扱いが最後まで崩れない。上弦の参・猗窩座が人間だった頃の記憶を取り戻して自ら消える場面や、上弦の壱・黒死牟が弟への嫉妬に行き着く場面は、その設計が最も強く出たところとして読まれている。始祖である鬼舞辻無惨だけがこの扱いから外され、生への執着と保身だけで描かれる点も、対比として指摘されることが多い。

呼吸と痣という仕組み

鬼殺隊士は呼吸法で身体能力を引き上げて戦う。水・炎・雷・風・岩の五つが基本にあり、そこから派生した呼吸が枝分かれしている。作中では、すべての呼吸の源が日の呼吸であること、炭治郎の家に代々伝わるヒノカミ神楽がその日の呼吸そのものであることが明かされる。もう一つの仕組みが痣で、一定の体温と心拍数を超えると発現し、身体能力が跳ね上がる。ただし痣を出した者は二十五歳を超えて生きられないという代償が付き、柱たちはそれを承知のうえで柱稽古に取り入れる。勝つための手段そのものに寿命という値札が付いていることが、この作品の戦闘設計の特徴として挙げられる。刀の色や日輪刀の材質など、細部の設定もこの日の呼吸を中心に組み直されていく。

人気の絶頂で終わらせた

連載終了は2020年5月18日発売の週刊少年ジャンプ24号、第205話。この時点で単行本の累計発行部数は電子版を含めて6000万部を突破しており、テレビアニメ第一期の反響で部数が伸び続けている最中だった。約4年3カ月・全23巻という長さは、同誌の看板作としては短い部類に入る。引き延ばさずに畳んだ判断は好意的に受け取られることが多い一方、無限城編の終盤で柱が次々に退場していく速度や、最終話をまるごと現代の子孫の話に充てた構成については、掲載当時から賛否が分かれた。完結後も部数は伸び続け、2025年7月17日時点で全世界累計2億2000万部に達しており、連載を畳んだことが人気の減退につながらなかったことは数字の上でも裏づけられている。集英社もこの発表で、連載終了から4年以上が経ってなお幅広い世代に安定した人気を得ていると説明している。

アニメが作った二度目の山

原作の売れ方はアニメ化と強く結び付いている。2019年のテレビアニメ第一期のあとに部数が跳ね上がり、2020年10月公開の劇場版無限列車編は日本国内の歴代興行収入一位となった。原作が先に完結し、アニメが後から物語を追いかける形になったため、結末を知る読者と、まだ知らない視聴者が同時に存在する期間が長く続いている。無限城編は劇場版三部作として作られ、第一章は2025年7月18日公開、2026年4月9日までの国内興行収入は約402億円、全世界の総興行収入は約1179億円を記録した。原作の結末はすでに公開情報だが、映像で追う側にとってはこれから起きることであり、ネタバレの扱いが割れやすい作品になっている。

Demons carried human lives too

Nearly every demon who falls gets a flashback to their life as a human: someone starving, someone sick, someone abandoned by their family. Tanjiro presses his hands together over a demon he's just beheaded and says he's sorry for them. That's characterization for Tanjiro, but it's also the design of the story's antagonists as a whole: demons are things that must be destroyed, and their becoming demons is still something to pity, and that double standard holds all the way through. The moment Upper Rank Three Akaza recovers his human memories and dissolves himself, or Upper Rank One Kokushibo's backstory of envying his own younger brother, are usually read as where this design shows through hardest. Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor, is the one figure exempted from this treatment, written with nothing but appetite for life and self-preservation, and that contrast gets pointed out often.

The mechanics of Breathing and Demon Marks

Demon Slayers fight by boosting their bodies through Breathing styles. Five base styles, Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind, Stone, branch into further styles derived from them. The story eventually reveals that every Breathing style traces back to Sun Breathing, and that the Hinokami Kagura passed down in Tanjiro's family is Sun Breathing itself. The other mechanic is the Demon Mark, which triggers past a certain body temperature and heart rate and sharply raises physical ability, at the cost of a lifespan that ends before twenty-five, a trade the Hashira accept going into their joint training. The detail most often cited about this story's combat design is that the very tool for winning comes with a price tag attached to it. Smaller details, like blade colors and the material of Nichirin swords, get reorganized around Sun Breathing as the story goes on.

Ending at the peak of its popularity

Serialization ended with chapter 205 in the May 18, 2020 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. At that point the print run, including digital editions, had already passed 60 million copies and was still climbing on the strength of the first anime season. Roughly four years and three months across 23 volumes is short by the standards of the magazine's flagship titles. The decision to close it out rather than stretch it further is generally viewed favorably, though the pacing of Hashira deaths late in the Infinity Castle arc, and devoting the entire final chapter to present-day descendants, split opinion from the time it ran. Sales kept climbing after the series ended, reaching 220 million copies worldwide by July 17, 2025, evidence, in the numbers themselves, that ending the story didn't hurt its popularity. Shueisha's own announcement noted the series maintaining stable popularity across a wide age range more than four years after it concluded.

The anime built a second peak

How well the manga sold is closely tied to the anime. The print run jumped after the first TV season in 2019, and the October 2020 feature film covering the Mugen Train arc became the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history. Because the manga finished first and the anime has been catching up ever since, there's been a long stretch where readers who know the ending and viewers who don't coexist. The Infinity Castle arc was made into a three-part theatrical trilogy; Part 1 opened July 18, 2025 and had grossed roughly 40.2 billion yen domestically and about 117.9 billion yen worldwide as of April 9, 2026. The manga's ending is already public information, but for people following the story on screen it's still ahead of them, which makes this one of those titles where what counts as a spoiler is genuinely contested.

  • 連載開始日を2016年2月15日発売の週刊少年ジャンプ2016年11号とする点は、英語版Wikipediaとゲーム系媒体（GAME Watch）で一致したが、集英社公式サイト上での明記は確認できなかった。
  • 最終決戦での負傷の詳細（炭治郎が左目の視力と左腕の機能を失ったこと、栗花落カナヲが薬を撃ち込むために片目の視力を失ったこと）は、ファンサイト以外の出典で裏付けが取れなかったため、本文では触れていない。

  • The start date, given as the issue released February 15, 2016 (Weekly Shonen Jump 2016 No. 11), is consistent between English Wikipedia and gaming outlets (GAME Watch), but could not be confirmed on Shueisha's own site.
  • Specific injuries from the final battle (that Tanjiro lost sight in his left eye and use of his left arm, that Kanao lost sight in one eye from administering the drug) could only be found on fan sites, so they are left out of the main text.
