2018年6月、宮城県仙台市。常人離れした身体能力を持つ高校生・虎杖悠仁は、祖父を看取った夜、オカルト研究会の先輩を助けるため、封印されていた特級呪物・両面宿儺の指を飲み込む。人間の負の感情から生まれる化け物である呪霊と、それを祓う呪術師。虎杖はこうして世界の裏側へ足を踏み入れる。千年前の術師たちが滅ぼしきれなかった呪いの王・両面宿儺を体内に宿した虎杖には、当然のように死刑が言い渡される。だが最強の呪術師・五条悟の提案で、散らばった宿儺の指20本をすべて取り込んでから死ぬという猶予が与えられ、虎杖は東京都立呪術高等専門学校に入学する。同級生の伏黒恵、釘崎野薔薇とともに任務をこなす日々は、はじめのうち学園ものの体裁を保っている。しかし特級呪霊たちと、かつての特級呪詛師・夏油傑の姿をした何者かが、五条悟の排除と人類の作り替えを企てて動き出したとき、話の性質は一変する。呪術は誰のためにあるのか、呪霊を祓うことは人を救うことなのか。人が正しく死ぬのを手伝いたい、という虎杖の動機が、報われるかどうかも含めて全編を貫く軸になる。

June 2018, Sendai. Yuji Itadori, a high schooler with inhuman physical ability, loses his grandfather one night, and later that night swallows a sealed Special Grade cursed object, the finger of Sukuna, King of Curses, to save a senior member of his school's Occult Research Club. Cursed spirits, monsters born from negative human emotion, and the jujutsu sorcerers who exorcise them: Yuji has just stepped into the world behind the ordinary one. Carrying inside him the King of Curses that sorcerers a thousand years ago couldn't finish off, Yuji is sentenced to death as a matter of course. But Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer alive, buys him time: eat all twenty of Sukuna's scattered fingers, then die. On those terms Yuji enrolls at Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu High. His days running missions alongside classmates Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki keep the shape of a school story at first. That changes once Special Grade cursed spirits, and something wearing the face of the late Special Grade curse user Suguru Geto, move to eliminate Gojo and remake humanity. What is jujutsu sorcery actually for? Does exorcising curses save anyone? Yuji's stated motive, wanting to help people die properly, runs through the whole story, whether or not it ever pays off for him.

羂索は全国に10個の結界を設け、泳者と呼ばれる参加者が得点を奪い合う死滅回游を始動させる。得点を集めれば総則に新しいルールを追加できるという枠組みが持ち込まれ、物語は戦闘と交渉が同居するゲームの形へ組み替わる。虎杖、伏黒、乙骨、真希、秤らが各結界に分かれ、来栖華、日車寛見、髙羽史彦、鹿紫雲一といった泳者を味方につけていく。そして決定的な事態が起きる。宿儺は縛りによって1分間だけ肉体の主導権を虎杖に返し、その隙に呪物化させた虎杖の指を伏黒恵に飲み込ませた。受肉先は虎杖から伏黒へ移り、伏黒の肉体を得た宿儺が暴れ出す。ここで主人公は器という役目を失う。同時に、倒すべき敵が親友の体を着ているという条件を背負う。器であることが虎杖の呪いだった話は、器でなくなることがもっと重い、という話に反転する。

25〜30巻（人外魔境新宿決戦・最終話）
2018年12月24日、獄門疆から解放された五条悟と、伏黒の肉体を得た宿儺が新宿で激突する。宿儺は伏黒の十種影法術で呼び出した式神・魔虚羅の適応能力を自分の術式に掛け合わせ、五条を斬り伏せる。最強は死に、残された者だけで宿儺を倒す戦いが始まる。鹿紫雲一が命を代償にする術式で挑んで敗れ、岩手では髙羽史彦の術式に付き合わされて消耗した羂索が、乙骨憂太に首を落とされる。新宿では虎杖、乙骨、真希、日車、東堂、秤、脹相らが入れ替わり立ち替わり宿儺へ当たり、脹相は虎杖を庇って死ぬ。渋谷から意識が戻らなかった釘崎野薔薇も戦線へ復帰する。誰か一人が最強として勝つのではなく、全員が少しずつ削るという形で決着へ向かう。そして最後の数話は、戦いのあとの日常に充てられる。

Vols. 1-8 / the Cursed Womb: Death Painting arc through the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc
A death in the family draws Yuji into the world of sorcery: sentenced to death as Sukuna's vessel, he's allowed to enroll at Jujutsu High on the condition that he eat every one of Sukuna's fingers before he dies. In the Cursed Womb: Death Painting arc, Yuji dies once fighting a Special Grade curse that's appeared at a juvenile facility, and revives through his bond with Sukuna. In the arc that follows, Junpei Yoshino, a boy Yuji had connected with, is killed by the Special Grade curse Mahito. The Kyoto Goodwill Event arc brings a meeting with Aoi Todo and an attack by the Special Grade curse Hanami; after that, Yuji fights the Death Painting brothers Eso and Kechizu. This stretch of the story runs on school-battle logic, a new enemy for every mission, and Yuji's death sentence is still treated as something that can be pushed further down the road. But people keep dying senselessly to curses from the very start, and every win leaves an aftertaste of someone who couldn't be saved.

Vols. 8-16 / the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death arc through the Shibuya Incident
Hidden Inventory / Premature Death, set in 2006 and 2007, tells how Gojo and Geto were once best friends, and how Geto fell into being a curse user determined to wipe out non-sorcerers. Readers learn here that today's enemy was shaped by yesterday's failure. In the Shibuya Incident that follows, a veil drops over Halloween-night Shibuya Station, and Gojo, with civilians held hostage, gets sealed inside the Prison Realm. The instant the strongest sorcerer is taken off the board, the balance the story had maintained collapses. Kento Nanami is killed by Mahito, Nobara Kugisaki is critically wounded and left unaccounted for, and Shibuya racks up a heavy death toll. It's also revealed that whoever has been wearing Geto's body is actually Kenjaku, a curse user who's been hopping between bodies for a thousand years. What started as a school-battle story turns, here, into a record of a losing battle. In the fallout, Principal Masamichi Yaga is framed and executed, and Yuji's stay of execution is revoked.

Vols. 16-25 / the Culling Game arc
Kenjaku sets up ten barriers across the country and launches the Culling Game, where participants called players fight each other for points that can be spent to add new rules to the game's binding vow. The story restructures itself into something that's part combat, part negotiation. Yuji, Megumi, Yuta Okkotsu, Maki Zenin, and Kinji Hakari, split across different barriers, bring players like Hana Kurusu, Hiromi Higuruma, Fumihiko Takaba, and Kashimo Ichi onto their side. Then the turning point hits: using a binding vow, Sukuna returns control of the body to Yuji for exactly one minute, long enough to force Yuji's own cursed finger, now turned into an object, down Megumi Fushiguro's throat. Vessel status transfers from Yuji to Megumi, and Sukuna, now wearing his friend's body, goes on a rampage. The protagonist loses the one role that had defined him. At the same time, he now carries a new condition: the enemy to be defeated is wearing his best friend's body. Being a vessel was Yuji's curse; the story now flips that into something heavier: no longer being one.

The Shinjuku Showdown
Vols. 25-30 / the Shinjuku Showdown through the final chapter
On December 24, 2018, Gojo, freed from the Prison Realm, clashes with Sukuna, now inside Megumi's body, in Shinjuku. Sukuna combines the adaptive power of Mahoraga, a shikigami summoned through Megumi's Ten Shadows Technique, with his own technique, and cuts Gojo down. The strongest is dead, and the fight to beat Sukuna now falls to whoever's left. Kashimo Ichi challenges Sukuna with a technique that costs him his life and loses; in Iwate, Kenjaku, worn down after getting dragged through Takaba's technique, has his head taken by Yuta Okkotsu. In Shinjuku, Yuji, Yuta, Maki, Higuruma, Todo, Hakari, and Choso take turns hitting Sukuna, and Choso dies shielding Yuji. Nobara, who never regained consciousness after Shibuya, returns to the fight. Rather than any single strongest fighter winning, the ending comes from everyone chipping away at Sukuna a little at a time. The last several chapters are then given over to ordinary life after the fighting stops.

五条悟は第236話（26巻）で戦死する。宿儺は伏黒恵の十種影法術が呼ぶ式神・魔虚羅の適応能力を自分の術式と組み合わせ、空間ごと断つ斬撃で五条を腰の上から真っ二つにした。運ばれた五条は笑顔で生涯を終える。以後、宿儺を倒す役目は残された術師たちに移る。鹿紫雲一は命を代償にする術式で挑んで死亡（第238話）。羂索は岩手で髙羽史彦の術式に付き合わされて消耗したところを乙骨憂太に首を落とされて死ぬが、その直前に天元との同化の権利を宿儺へ移している（第243話）。新宿では、虎杖悠仁、乙骨憂太、禪院真希、日車寛見、東堂葵、秤金次、脹相らが順に宿儺へ当たる。脹相は炎の爆発から虎杖を庇い、弟になってくれてありがとうという趣旨の言葉を残して死ぬ（第259話）。渋谷事変以来意識が戻らなかった釘崎野薔薇が復帰して打撃を与え、第268話で宿儺はついに伏黒の肉体から引き剥がされ、消滅する。伏黒恵は生還する。虎杖は最後に宿儺へ別の道を示すが、宿儺はそれを受け取らないまま消える。最終話は第271話「これから」で、2024年9月30日発売の週刊少年ジャンプ44号に掲載された。死んだ宿儺の魂は真人と行き会い、忌み子として蔑まれたことへの報復に人生を使ったと認めたうえで、次があるなら別の生き方を選んでもいいかもしれない、と漏らす。生きている側は新宿の後始末を終え、反省を抱えたまま呪術界の日常へ戻っていく。翌日、虎杖・伏黒・釘崎の3人は呪いの被害者を助ける任務に向かい、物語はそこで終わる。単行本30巻には、雑誌掲載分に加えて16ページの描き下ろしエピローグが収録された。小沢優子、パンダ、釘崎野薔薇、裏梅のその後が描かれ、パンダは機能停止して五条家が管理していること、乙骨憂太が五条亡きあとの五条家を当主代理として継ぎ、2080年時点で孫が2人いることなどが示される。呪術そのものが消える結末ではない。呪霊を生む人間の負の感情は残り、術師は明日も任務に出る。世界の仕組みは変わらないまま、虎杖が生き延びて次の現場へ歩いていくところで幕が下りる。

Satoru Gojo dies in chapter 236 (volume 26). Sukuna combines the adaptive power of Mahoraga, a shikigami summoned by Megumi Fushiguro's Ten Shadows Technique, with his own technique, cutting Gojo clean in half above the waist with a slash that severs space itself. Carried off, Gojo dies smiling. From here, beating Sukuna becomes the job of the sorcerers left standing. Kashimo Ichi challenges him with a life-costing technique and dies (chapter 238). Kenjaku, worn down in Iwate after being dragged through Fumihiko Takaba's technique, has his head taken by Yuta Okkotsu, but not before transferring his right to merge with Tengen over to Sukuna (chapter 243). In Shinjuku, Yuji Itadori, Yuta Okkotsu, Maki Zenin, Fumihiko Takaba, Aoi Todo, Kinji Hakari, and Choso take turns engaging Sukuna. Choso shields Yuji from an explosion of flame and dies, telling him something like: thank you for being my brother (chapter 259). Nobara Kugisaki, who never regained consciousness after Shibuya, returns and lands a blow; in chapter 268, Sukuna is finally torn from Megumi's body and destroyed. Megumi survives. In their final exchange, Yuji offers Sukuna another way to live, which Sukuna doesn't take before disappearing. The final chapter, 271, titled 'What's Next,' ran in the September 30, 2024 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. Sukuna's dead soul crosses paths with Mahito's, admits he spent his life getting revenge for being despised as a cursed child, and murmurs that next time, if there is one, he might choose to live differently. The living wrap up Shibuya's aftermath and return, carrying what they've learned, to ordinary life as sorcerers. The next day, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara head out on a mission to help a curse victim, and that's where the story ends. Volume 30 adds a 16-page epilogue beyond what ran in the magazine, following up on Yuko Ozawa, Panda, Nobara Kugisaki, and Uraume: Panda has shut down and is being maintained by the Gojo family; Yuta Okkotsu has taken over as acting head of the Gojo family after Gojo's death, and by the year 2080 has two grandchildren. It isn't an ending where sorcery itself disappears. The negative human emotion that creates curses is still there, and sorcerers still go out on the job the next day. The mechanics of the world don't change; the story closes on Yuji, alive, walking toward whatever comes next.

解説

呪いは人間から出てくる

作中の設定として、呪霊は人間の負の感情が漏れ出して集まったものであり、呪術師はそれを祓う。術師は特級から4級まで格付けされ、生得的な術式を持ち、術式を極限まで高めた領域展開、条件と引き換えに力を得る縛り、負のエネルギーを反転させて治す反転術式といった規則の上で戦う。重要なのは、敵の供給源が人間社会そのものだという点にある。呪霊を何体祓っても、人が誰かを厭う限り次が生まれる。だからこの作品では、戦いに勝つことが世界の改善に直結しない。最終話でも呪術は消えず、呪霊も消えない。少年漫画の枠の中で、根を絶てない敵を設定したことが、全編に共通する苦さの出どころになっている。呪いを祓う仕事は、社会の側を治す仕事ではないという線が、最後まで動かされない。

器という時限装置が、主人公から親友へ移る

虎杖は第1話で宿儺の指を飲み込み、指をすべて取り込んだら処刑されるという条件で生かされる。つまり主人公の生存そのものが期限つきの装置として設計されている。さらに作中では、羂索が虎杖の母親の肉体を乗っ取り、宿儺の器となる子として虎杖を産ませていたことが明かされる。虎杖は偶然の被害者ではなく、最初から器として作られた存在だった。ところが死滅回游の終盤、宿儺は縛りを使って受肉先を伏黒恵へ移す。虎杖は器という役目を奪われ、代わりに親友の体を壊さずに宿儺を倒すという、はるかに厳しい条件を負う。呪いを背負わされることより、呪いを他人に背負わせてしまうことのほうが重いという反転が、ここで起きている。死刑を宣告された少年の話は、こうして親友を取り返す話へ書き換えられる。

最強を退場させる構造

五条悟は連載初期から圧倒的に強い存在として描かれ、その強さが読者の安心材料になっていた。作品はそれを二度奪う。一度目は渋谷事変での獄門疆による封印で、この瞬間に均衡が崩れ、七海建人らが死ぬ。二度目は第236話の戦死で、最強がいれば解決するという読み方が完全に断たれる。以後の新宿決戦は、虎杖、乙骨、真希、日車、東堂、秤、釘崎、脹相らが役割を分担し、一人ずつ持ち場を担う群像戦の形になる。単独の英雄ではなく総力戦で決着させるための布石として五条の退場が置かれていた、と読まれている。五条の死が読者に与えた衝撃の大きさは、当時の報道やSNSの反響としても記録されている。最強の不在を埋めるために誰が何を差し出すか、という配分の話に、後半の戦いは変わっている。

結末の受け取られ方

事実として、最終盤の3話ほどは戦闘ではなく戦いのあとの日常に充てられ、呪術も呪霊もなくならないまま物語は閉じる。宿儺の内面が語られるのは死後の場面であり、そこに宿儺の人生を変えられたかもしれない人物らしき後ろ姿が描かれるが、正体は明示されない。この幕引きはSNS上で大きな反響を呼び、報道でも取り上げられた。読者・評者の側からは、伏線とみなされていた要素が回収されていない、エピローグが短いといった批判と、根を絶てない世界を描いてきた作品として一貫している、という擁護の双方が語られている。賛否の中身はいずれも読者の解釈であり、作中で説明が与えられているわけではない。何を伏線と見なすかによって評価が分かれる作品であり、その分かれ方自体がこの結末の特徴になっている。

アニメと原作の現在地は違う

映像化は原作にまだ追いついていない。テレビアニメは2020年に第1期、2023年に第2期（懐玉・玉折と渋谷事変）が放送され、第3期の死滅回游前編は公式サイトの告知どおり2026年1月8日に放送開始した。つまり2026年9月の時点で、五条の死も宿儺との決着もアニメでは描かれていない。また前日譚の0巻を映像化した劇場版呪術廻戦 0（2021年12月公開）は国内興行収入130億円を超え、この作品の広がりを決定づけた。アニメから入った読者と原作読者では見えている範囲が違うため、この解説は原作コミックスを基準にしている。アニメ側の演出上の改変については扱っていない。原作とアニメで筋が食い違う箇所は確認していないため、本文では扱っていない。

Curses come out of people

In the story's own terms, cursed spirits are negative human emotion that leaks out and clumps together, and jujutsu sorcerers exist to exorcise them. Sorcerers are ranked from Special Grade down to Grade 4, each with an innate technique, and fight using rules like Domain Expansion (a technique pushed to its limit), binding vows (power traded for a condition), and Reverse Cursed Technique (negative energy flipped to heal). What matters is that the enemy's supply line is human society itself. No matter how many curses get exorcised, a new one is born every time someone hates someone else. So in this story, winning a fight doesn't translate into the world getting better. Curses are still around in the final chapter; so are cursed spirits. Building a shonen manga around an enemy whose root can't be cut is where a lot of the story's bitterness comes from. The line never moves: exorcising curses isn't the same job as fixing society.

A vessel as a countdown timer, passed from the protagonist to his best friend

Yuji swallows Sukuna's finger in chapter 1 and is kept alive on the condition that he'll be executed once he's eaten all of them; his own survival is designed, from the start, as a device with an expiration date. The story later reveals that Kenjaku took over Yuji's mother's body and had her give birth to Yuji specifically to serve as Sukuna's vessel: Yuji wasn't an accidental victim, he was built to be one from the beginning. Then, late in the Culling Game, Sukuna uses a binding vow to transfer the vessel role to Megumi Fushiguro. Yuji loses the role that had defined him, and picks up a far harder condition instead: beat Sukuna without destroying his best friend's body. Being made to carry a curse turns out to be lighter than making someone else carry it; that's the reversal happening here. A story about a boy sentenced to death gets rewritten, this way, into a story about getting a friend back.

The structure built around losing the strongest fighter

Gojo is written as overwhelmingly strong from early in the series, and that strength functions as a source of reassurance for readers. The story takes it away twice. The first time is the Prison Realm sealing during the Shibuya Incident, the moment the balance breaks and Nanami and others die. The second is his death in chapter 236, which permanently closes off the idea that things get solved as long as the strongest fighter is around. Everything after that, the Shinjuku Showdown, becomes an ensemble fight where Yuji, Yuta, Maki, Takaba, Todo, Hakari, Nobara, and Choso each take a piece of the job. It's generally read as setup: taking Gojo off the board so the ending could be decided by a group effort instead of one hero. How much the shock of Gojo's death landed with readers is documented in contemporary news coverage and social media reaction. In the back half, the fight becomes a question of who gives up what to cover for the strongest fighter's absence.

How the ending landed

As a matter of fact, roughly the last three chapters are given over to life after the fighting rather than combat, and the story closes without curses or cursed spirits disappearing. Sukuna's inner life is only shown after his death, in a scene where a figure who might have been able to change his life appears from behind, unidentified. This ending drew a large reaction on social media and was covered in the press. From readers and critics, both sides showed up: complaints that elements assumed to be setup went unresolved, or that the epilogue felt short, alongside defenses that this consistency, a world whose root can't be cut, is exactly the point the story had been building toward. Both reactions are interpretation, not something the story states outright. What counts as unresolved setup is genuinely a matter of individual judgment, and that disagreement is itself part of how this ending reads.

The anime and the manga are at different points

The screen adaptation hasn't caught up to the manga. The anime ran its first season in 2020, its second (Hidden Inventory / Premature Death and the Shibuya Incident) in 2023, and season 3's first part, covering the Culling Game, began airing January 8, 2026, as announced on the official site. That means as of September 2026, neither Gojo's death nor the resolution with Sukuna has aired. The prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (released December 2021), adapting the volume 0 prequel, grossed over 13 billion yen domestically and helped cement the franchise's reach. Readers who came in through the anime and those following the manga are seeing different amounts of the story, which is why this explainer is based on the manga. It doesn't cover changes made for the anime's pacing or staging, and no discrepancies between the manga's plot and the anime's have been checked here.
