Synopsis
Amestris is a military state that has folded alchemy into its own war machine. Alchemy isn't magic here - it's a discipline of understanding, breaking down, and reconstructing matter, governed throughout by the principle of equivalent exchange: gaining anything requires paying a price of equal value. Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, trying to bring their dead mother back, attempt the forbidden act of human transmutation. It fails, and the brothers are pulled before the Gate of Truth and charged a toll: Edward loses his left leg, Alphonse loses his entire body. Edward pays with his own right arm to pull Alphonse's soul back and bind it to a suit of armor lying nearby. What's left afterward is a boy fitted with automail limbs, and an empty suit of armor with no body inside it. Chasing any lead on getting their original bodies back, Edward earns his State Alchemist certification at age twelve, and the brothers set out together, nicknamed the military's dogs. Their target is the Philosopher's Stone, rumored to break past the limits equivalent exchange normally imposes. But once they learn the Stone is made from the lives of countless living people, the goal of the journey itself is thrown into question. Along the way, the brothers encounter Scar, a killer who targets State Alchemists exclusively, and clash with a group of inhuman beings, each marked somewhere on the body with an ouroboros symbol. Known as Homunculi, they carry the names of the seven deadly sins - Pride, Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Greed, Sloth, and Wrath. And slowly, the shape becomes visible of whoever created them, and of the vast transmutation that same someone has been carrying out using the entire nation as its material.

How the story is built
- Setup
A brother in armor, and a mother who can't be reclaimed
Roughly volumes 1-5, from Resembool to Laboratory 5
The failed human transmutation has already happened before the story opens; readers enter from the aftermath. What gets built up here is a working sense of what this world's rules allow, and what any given act costs. In Lior, the brothers expose a priest who's been passing alchemy off as miracles to draw a following - establishing early on that alchemy is only a tool, and it's the person using it who's held accountable. Next comes Shou Tucker's chimera, a State Alchemist who used his own daughter and her dog as raw material for a result - the moment the series announces to its young readers that it's willing to go as far as the ethics of science itself. Then Scar appears, killing State Alchemists one after another, and at the Fifth Laboratory the brothers learn the Philosopher's Stone is made from living human beings. What was supposed to be their goal turns into something they can no longer bring themselves to pursue. From here, the brothers' journey stops being a simple story of restitution.
- Development
Seeing what the nation actually contains
Roughly volumes 6-13, from the Dublith arc through the meeting with Father
The story's focus shifts from the brothers' private amends to the design of the nation itself. Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes discovers the existence of a national transmutation circle and, moving to report it, is shot dead by Envy disguised as his wife Gracia. It's a portrait of individual goodwill crushed by institutional walls, and it becomes the reason Roy Mustang and others start digging from inside the military. Lust is burned to death by Mustang at the Third Laboratory - having exhausted the regenerations her Philosopher's Stone allowed her - the chapter that reveals the Homunculi aren't immortal at all, but running on a finite fuel source. Passing through Gluttony's stomach, the group emerges underground and meets Father, who governs from beneath the capital. Around the same time, the brothers' long-absent father, Van Hohenheim, is revealed to be a survivor of Xerxes, a kingdom destroyed in a single night centuries earlier - and events from hundreds of years past turn out to connect directly to the present.
- Turn
Counted as sacrifices
Roughly volumes 14-21, from Briggs through preparations for the coup in the capital
The northern fortress of Briggs and its commander, Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong, join the picture, and the conflict widens to the scale of the entire country. Here the full shape of the enemy's plan comes into view. Amestris's own borders and the scars of wars fought across it turn out to have been drawn to carve a single, enormous transmutation circle across the whole nation - and even the Ishvalan genocide thirteen years earlier turns out to have been engineered by the Homunculi to carve part of the circle in blood. The incident cited as its trigger, an officer shooting an Ishvalan girl, turns out to have been staged by Envy in disguise. And what Father needed all along was a person who had performed human transmutation and opened the Gate of Truth - a sacrifice. The very crime the brothers committed turns out to have been counted as a component in the enemy's design. At the same time, allies accumulate inside the military, and Ling and Mei from the nation of Xing, along with Scar - once their pursuer - all end up on the same side of the board. This is the stretch where the lines of who's fighting alongside whom get redrawn.
- Resolution
Promised Day
Roughly volumes 22-27, from Promised Day through the final chapter, 'The End of the Journey'
On the day of a total solar eclipse, Father gathers his sacrifices and activates the national transmutation circle, absorbing nearly every soul in Amestris to seize the power of a god. Up to this point, the enemy has been winning; everything left is about taking it back. The groundwork Hohenheim laid across the country over many long years activates, and a reverse transmutation pushes the stolen souls back out. On the ground, allies split into groups and settle their own individual fights. Mustang, cornered by Pride and Wrath, is forced to open the Gate against his will and loses his sight. King Bradley falls in his fight against Scar. Greed lets himself merge with Father in order to weaken him from within. And as Father's grip on the power he's seized starts to slip, the Elric brothers make their final choice. After the battle, the survivors scatter to their own corners of the world, and a single photograph is left behind.
The ending
Open the ending (it is given away in full)
On Promised Day, Father uses Edward, Alphonse, Izumi, Mustang, and Hohenheim as sacrifices to activate the national transmutation circle, drawing up nearly every soul in Amestris and forcing open the World's Gate of Truth to seize the power of a god. But the groundwork Hohenheim spent hundreds of years laying across the entire country activates, and a reverse transmutation pushes most of those souls back out - leaving Father with power his own body can no longer contain, propped up only by a finite Philosopher's Stone. On the ground, Mustang corners Envy, the one who killed Hughes, and is stopped from crossing that final line by Riza Hawkeye. Edward calls out that Envy has always envied the sheer persistence of human beings, and Envy crushes his own core stone and destroys himself. Lust is burned to death by Mustang; Gluttony is absorbed by Pride; Sloth is defeated by the Armstrong siblings together with the Curtis couple. King Bradley (Wrath) falls in battle against Scar's group; Pride is defeated by Edward, exhausts his Stone, and shrinks down to the form of a fetus small enough to hold in one hand. Forced against his will to open the Gate, Mustang is captured and loses his sight. Greed, who had been borrowing Ling's body, releases Ling and merges himself with Father, breaking the enemy down from the inside before he too disappears. In the final stretch, Alphonse - his armor body nearly destroyed by one of Father's blows - offers up his own soul as payment to bring Edward's right arm back as living flesh. Edward beats Father down with that bare fist rather than alchemy, and the weakened Father is seized by countless hands reaching out from the Gate of Truth and dragged inside, vanishing along with them. As the price for getting Alphonse back, Edward gives up his own Gate of Truth - his alchemy itself - and Alphonse is restored to his original body. Hohenheim gives thanks at Trisha's grave and dies there on his knees. Mustang regains his sight using Dr. Marcoh's Philosopher's Stone, and in exchange, agrees to let the Ishvalan people return home, taking up a post in the east himself. Scar, too, joins the effort to rebuild. Ling returns to Xing and takes the throne as emperor. Edward heads west and Alphonse heads east to study alchemy abroad. Years later, echoing the language of equivalent exchange, Edward tells Winry he'll give her half his life if she gives him half of hers - and she answers that she'll give him the whole thing, not half. The story closes on a single group photograph that includes their children.
Notes
The yardstick of equivalent exchange, removed at the very end
Equivalent exchange is presented, repeatedly, as a law of the world within the story. But as the story goes on, it's shown again and again that the principle, while true as an explanation, isn't enough as a way to live. No price, however large, brings their mother back; there's no payment equal to the lives lost at Ishvala. When Alphonse offers up his own soul in the final battle, and Edward gives up alchemy itself, neither act reads as a balanced transaction - what moves things forward is whoever offers first, without stopping to calculate whether it balances. The ending's proposal scene, which borrows the language of equivalent exchange only to be undercut by Winry's answer - not half, but everything - follows the same shape. The series never rejects equivalent exchange outright, but by the end it has shifted the yardstick: what people can do for each other lies outside equivalent exchange altogether.
The trick of the nation itself being a transmutation circle
Partway through, it's revealed that Amestris's own borders, and the repeated wars fought inside them, were drawn to carve an enormous transmutation circle across the map. The Ishvalan genocide, and even the incident cited as its trigger - an officer shooting a girl - were staged by the Homunculi to carve part of that circle in blood. That reveal lets place names, incidents, and the backstories of various soldiers introduced early on be read again, not as scattered episodes, but as pieces of one single blueprint. At the same time, the series is credited with depicting state violence without reducing it to individual malice alone, while also refusing to let the people who followed orders off the hook. The guilt that Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, and Scar carry to the very end isn't resolved just because the mastermind is defeated. Treating the exposure of the actual enemy and the reckoning with one's own complicity as two separate matters is part of what keeps this series from settling into simple good-versus-evil.
How the 2003 anime's ending differs
The first TV anime (October 2003-October 2004, 51 episodes) was made before it was clear how the manga would end, so its final stretch goes its own way, independent of the source material. Even the Homunculi are set up differently: King Bradley appears as Pride rather than Wrath as in the manga, and his son Selim is treated as an ordinary human boy. In the finale, Edward is thrown through the Gate as the cost of transmuting Alphonse's body back, ending up in the real world with no alchemy - and the story's actual conclusion comes in the film Conqueror of Shamballa (released 2005), set in 1923 Germany. The second TV anime, simply titled Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (April 2009-July 2010, 64 episodes, produced by Bones), redid the story faithfully to the manga, and finished at almost the same time as the manga's own final chapter. So the answer to 'how does Fullmetal Alchemist end' depends on which version is meant. What's covered here is the manga's own ending.
Why it's cited as a model for sticking the landing
This series is often discussed for how thoroughly it uses up nearly everything it plants early on by the time it reaches its ending. What's shown at the Fifth Laboratory about the Stone's materials, what Hughes's discovery meant, even the family circumstances behind the brothers' absent father - all of it eventually connects into a single final plan. That the author wrapped the story up decisively at 27 volumes and 108 chapters without padding it out, and that the manga's own final chapter and the second anime's finale landed at nearly the same time, are both often cited as reasons it's held up as a model of a long-running series that actually sticks its landing. On the awards side, it won the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category in 2004, and in 2011 received both the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's New Creator Award and the Seiun Award for comics. The final volume, 27, went on sale November 22, 2010, and reporting from October of that year already treated it as a certainty that the series would pass 50 million copies in print.

What we could not confirm
Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.
- The volume numbers given in structure's span field are rough estimates based on where the story breaks, not confirmed against the collected volumes (a primary source) for which events land in which volume, or how many chapters each volume contains. In particular, the volume in which Maes Hughes is killed is left unspecified here because the volume-by-volume summary in English Wikipedia did not match this account's own estimate
- The claim that the first printing of the final volume, 27, was 1.52 million copies, and that this was a record for a Square Enix comic, is confirmed only in the Japanese Wikipedia entry; it has not been corroborated by a publisher statement or news report
- A claim of 90 million copies in print worldwide across the series was seen on an individual site aggregating e-book sale announcements, but could not be confirmed via an official Square Enix statement or major news coverage. The figure used here is the 80 million total (as of July 2021, announced August 2022) that could be confirmed via an official source
- Whether Roy Mustang ultimately became Fuhrer. English Wikipedia describes him, as of the epilogue, still holding officer rank, while some Japanese-language summaries suggest he succeeds Grumman as Fuhrer - the two accounts conflict. Since this could not be confirmed as explicitly stated in the manga, the text here is limited to saying he was posted to the east to help rebuild Ishval
- How many years after the final battle the epilogue takes place is not explicitly stated within the story, as far as could be confirmed. Exactly who appears in the closing group photo (including whether Mei Chang or Lan Fan are shown) also varies between sources and could not be pinned down
- Whether the bonus chapter that ran in the October 2010 issue is the same work as 'The Other End of the Journey,' the side story included in volume 27. Square Enix's product page lists the side story as included in the volume, but its relationship to the earlier magazine issue could not be confirmed
- The exact wording of Edward's proposal line ('It's equivalent exchange - I'll give you half my life if you give me half of yours' / 'I'll give you the whole thing, not half') relies on wording given in a Magmix article; it has not been checked against the actual page of the collected volume
- Scar's real name, and the specific role he took on in postwar Ishval's rebuilding
- The details of what became of Lan Fan, Mei Chang, and Olivier Mira Armstrong after the story's end
- The content of the 2003 TV anime's final episode is based on the Japanese Wikipedia entry and a Magmix article; the episode itself was not viewed directly
