Synopsis

Son Goku is a tailed boy living alone deep in the mountains when Bulma, a girl from the Western Capital, turns up looking for the Dragon Balls - seven orbs that grant any wish when gathered together. Goku already owns one, the four-star ball left to him by his late grandfather, and refuses to part with it, so he joins Bulma's search instead. Dragged into a clash with the world-conquering Pilaf Gang alongside Oolong, Yamcha, and Puar, Goku starts wanting to know just how far his own strength can go. He apprentices himself to Master Roshi, trains alongside Krillin, and steps into the World Martial Arts Tournament. Losing sends him back to train harder before he challenges someone stronger again, and the cycle repeats - opponents who show up as enemies keep turning up beside him in the next fight. Eventually the opposition stops being earthly martial artists altogether. A world-ending demon clan is revived, and beyond that waits a fact about Goku himself: he isn't from Earth at all, but the son of the Saiyans, a warrior race from space - and members of that same race come to Earth looking for him. The stage widens from Earth to the cosmos, the stakes rise from winning and losing to living and dying, and eventually to the survival of entire planets, as Goku, his companions, and eventually his own son take on one overwhelming opponent after another.

How the story is built

  1. Setup

Hunting the Balls, and the tournament

Volumes 1-16, the 'kid Goku' era

The series opens as an adventure story about a search. Goku, having met Bulma, travels around collecting the Dragon Balls and getting swept into trouble wherever they go; comedy carries most of the weight, and fights are just one beat among many. That shape starts to change with Goku's training under Master Roshi and the introduction of the World Martial Arts Tournament: he loses the final at the 21st tournament to Jackie Chun and at the 22nd to Tien Shinhan, and each loss kicks off a new round of training - a rhythm that locks in here. Alongside it, the plot about the Dragon Balls keeps moving, including the fight against the Red Ribbon Army. The tone shifts hard in volume 12, when Piccolo Daimao is revived and kills Krillin and Master Roshi; Goku drinks the Ultra Divine Water to unlock hidden power and beats him at mortal risk. After training at the Lookout, an adult Goku decides to marry Chi-Chi at the 23rd tournament and wins his first title there, defeating Piccolo's reincarnation, Piccolo Jr., in the final.

  2. Development

Into space, and the Super Saiyan

Volumes 17-28, the Saiyan arc and Frieza arc

In volume 17, Raditz arrives claiming to be Goku's brother, and it comes out that Goku is a Saiyan born on planet Vegeta. Goku teams up with Piccolo and lets Raditz run himself through along with Goku's own body to guarantee the kill. A hero dying in this fight marks a hard turn for the series, and the setting shifts from martial arts tournaments to outer space. Goku trains under King Kai in the afterlife and comes back to drive off Nappa and Vegeta, but Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo are all killed - and with Piccolo's death, Earth's own Dragon Balls disappear too. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma head to planet Namek to revive their friends and collide with the galactic overlord Frieza. The Ginyu Force and Frieza's escalating transformations lock in the pattern of the story continually raising the ceiling on how strong the strongest opponent is. Watching Krillin killed in front of him, Goku awakens as a Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza - the introduction of a power level presented as a literal staged transformation becomes the foundation for everything after it.

  3. Turn

Goku steps back, Gohan steps up

    Volumes 29-35, the Androids/Cell arc

Trunks arrives from the future warning that androids will appear in three years, and that Goku will collapse from heart disease. Framed as a race to change a foretold future, this arc is at the same time the story of Goku stepping down from the top spot. He does fall ill and drop out of the fight, while the android Cell absorbs Androids 17 and 18 to reach his perfect form. After training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Goku faces Cell in the Cell Games - and voluntarily surrenders partway through, handing the fight to Gohan. Seeing his friends hurt drives Gohan to awaken as a Super Saiyan 2. When Cell tries to self-destruct, Goku teleports both of them away to King Kai's planet and dies there. When Cell regenerates and returns, Gohan finishes him with a Kamehameha wave, hearing his dead father's voice urging him on. Goku turns down the chance to be revived, saying that strong enemies keep showing up because he's around - and the series delivers, once, a clean resolution about handing the story to the next generation.

  4. Resolution

Majin Buu, and ten years later

Volumes 36-42, the Majin Buu arc

Seven years on, Gohan is a high schooler moonlighting as the superhero Great Saiyaman. Goku is allowed back to the living world for one day and shows up at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament - but the story doesn't turn out to be Gohan's after all. The wizard Babidi frees the sealed Majin Buu, who defeats both Gohan and Vegeta; even Vegeta's self-destruction can't stop him. Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks, and Gohan, his hidden potential unlocked by the Elder Kai, both fight back but are absorbed into Buu regardless. Goku and Vegeta fuse via the Potara earrings into Vegito and cut their friends free from inside Buu's body. Stripped of everyone he had absorbed, Buu reverts to a small, purer form and destroys the Earth. The final confrontation moves to the Sacred World of the Kais. Even a Super Saiyan 3 at full power has no way to finish off an opponent that regenerates instantly. The only option left is gathering energy from the people of Earth.

The ending

Open the ending (it is given away in full)

The last battle is fought in the Sacred World of the Kais. Against the regenerative power of the pure Majin Buu, even Goku as a Super Saiyan 3 has no finishing blow. While Vegeta buys time, Goku decides to build a Spirit Bomb. Thanks to an earlier Dragon Ball wish, the Earth that Buu destroyed and the people he killed have already been restored to life - but when Goku calls out to Earth's people for help, they don't understand what's happening and won't raise their hands. That's where Mr. Satan comes in. As the world-famous champion, once he asks, everyone offers their energy at once. A massive Spirit Bomb, fed by the combined energy of Earth, Namek, and the afterlife, erases the pure Majin Buu. As his last act, Goku wishes for Buu to be reincarnated as someone good so they can fight again someday. Buu's soul is purified and is later reborn as a human boy named Uub. After the battle, a Dragon Ball wish erases everyone's memory of Majin Buu's rampage. The good half of Buu, split off earlier, lives on as Mr. Buu alongside Mr. Satan, while Buu the destroyer disappears from the world. Goku is revived too, and returns to his family. The story then jumps ten years ahead. Gohan and Videl now have a daughter, Pan, and Goku enters the World Martial Arts Tournament together with his granddaughter. At the venue, Goku spots a boy named Uub - Majin Buu's reincarnation, still unaware of his own strength. Goku sizes him up, decides to train him, and leaves the tournament grounds. The series ends as he says his goodbyes to his friends and flies off with Uub. Goku doesn't die, and no enemy is left standing; the only thing placed at the very end is the choice to go train the next generation. The final installment, chapter 519, was titled 'Goodbye, Dragon World' and ran in issue 25, 1995. In the collected volumes it appears in volume 42, which went on sale August 4, 1995. In the later Kanzenban complete edition (34 volumes, with the final volume 34 released April 2, 2004), Akira Toriyama himself added extra material to this closing scene. He has said he felt the original ending wasn't quite crisp enough, and wanted to make it clearer that Goku's fighting days were over and it was time to hand things to the next generation. The manga's original ending closes on this ten-years-later departure.

Notes

How an adventure story turned into a battle manga

This series wasn't a battle manga from day one. Early on it's a Journey to the West-inspired treasure hunt built mostly on comedy. Two turns account for how it became something else. One was introducing the World Martial Arts Tournament as a competitive framework: switching from open melees to single-elimination brackets created built-in anticipation for who fights whom next. The other was making training and defeat the story's actual fuel. Goku loses to Master Roshi at the 21st tournament and to Tien at the 22nd, and comes back stronger each time. Presenting strength as a series of discrete levels, with the bar for 'strongest' continually reset, gets pushed even further with Frieza's transformations and the Super Saiyan form. The tournament format, the training arc, and enemies who become allies are all patterns widely credited as becoming a shared language for shonen battle manga after this series.

How a world of wish-granted resurrection was made to work

The device at the center of this series is a set of orbs that grants a wish when all seven are gathered - including bringing back the dead. That premise threatens to make death not permanent at all. And indeed, Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, and Goku himself all die and come back over the course of the story. What keeps the tension alive, the reading goes, is that the stakes keep escalating to match. Earth's own Dragon Balls vanish the moment Piccolo dies, taking away the very mechanism for reviving anyone. Destroy the planet itself, and there's neither a way to revive someone nor a place to bring them back to. The afterlife is also used as a training ground, turning death, in places, from an exit into a transfer to another stage. At the same time, critics have long argued that once resurrection became a given, the weight of winning and losing eroded. Goku's own decision to refuse revival at the end of the Cell arc is sometimes read as the story answering that criticism from within.

A handoff to the next generation, tried once and then reversed

The Cell arc's ending is unambiguously a changing of the guard. Goku surrenders mid-fight and hands the rest to Gohan, then dies and turns down the chance to be revived. It's Gohan who defeats Cell. But once the Majin Buu arc begins, Gohan is given an ordinary high-school life, then loses to Buu and is absorbed. It's Goku, back among the living, who finishes the job, and the lead role reverts to him. Toriyama himself seems to have been uneasy about this: in explaining the material he added to the ending for the Kanzenban edition, he said he'd felt the original ending wasn't quite crisp enough, and wanted to make clear that Goku's fighting was over and it was time to pass things on. The manga's actual ending, closing on Goku and Uub's departure together, points in that same direction.

The abruptness of the ending, and what was behind it

The final chapter arrived without warning. The previous installment had just kicked off the ten-years-later tournament, reading as if a fight involving Goku, Vegeta, and Uub was only about to begin. The preview didn't announce a finale either - reportedly it only said something was coming. What actually happened was Goku flying off with Uub. Behind the scenes, the end of serialization is reported to have come at Toriyama's own strong request, but the effect on the stock and earnings of related companies was significant enough to require top-level meetings and management decisions at the companies involved. It's often described as a series that ended at the height of its popularity, and at the same time, ending not on a settled fight but on a handoff to the next generation is seen by some as consistent with the author's own intent.

Where the original ends, and what came after

The full 42-volume original manga closes completely on that departure ten years later. Everything made afterward - Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball DAIMA - exists as separate works produced after the original run ended, and none of them rewrite the manga's own ending. Uub, the boy left at the close of the original story, is still exactly where the promise of training left him. As for scale, total copies in print worldwide are reported to exceed 260 million, and an official site marking the 40th anniversary of the series' launch went up in 2024. To check the original ending, the reference point is the 42-volume Jump Comics edition, or the 34-volume Kanzenban complete edition that adds to it - kept distinct from the endings of the anime or any later series.

What we could not confirm

Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.

  • Which numbered tournament the ten-years-later event in the final chapter corresponds to could not be confirmed against an official source
  • The content and order of the individual wishes made on Namek's Dragon Balls (Porunga). That Earth and the dead were restored, and that memories of Majin Buu were erased, are confirmed by sources used here, but the breakdown of which wish did what is not
  • The reason for Uub's reincarnation: English Wikipedia attributes it to Goku's wish, while the Japanese Wikipedia article on Majin Buu attributes the soul's purification to the intervention of Enma Daio (the King of Hell/Yama). The relationship between the two accounts is unconfirmed
  • Whether Goku and Uub actually fought each other in the tournament shown in the final chapter, and if so what happened
  • The specific content of the material added in the Kanzenban complete edition (which scenes, how many pages). The fact of the addition and the author's own comment are confirmed via Japanese Wikipedia, but no primary source has been checked
  • The circumstances by which Vegeta was already alive again by the time of the final battle at the Sacred World of the Kais
  • The total of 519 chapters could not be confirmed on Shueisha's official site. Only the English Wikipedia figure and the 42-volume count have been confirmed
  • The exact chapter ranges collected in each volume. The official site's '42 panels' retrospective feature shows scenes per volume but doesn't mark chapter boundaries
  • The most recent domestic (Japan) print total. Japanese Wikipedia gives more than 160 million as of 2015, including the Kanzenban edition, but no more recent official figure has been confirmed
  • The circumstances behind the end of serialization (that it came at the author's strong request, and required top-level meetings and management decisions at related companies) rely on the Japanese Wikipedia account; no primary source has been checked
  • A 2024 Nikkei article reportedly citing a total of 260 million copies was visible only in search-result headlines; the full article text could not be retrieved, so it has not been included as a source
