Synopsis

Light Yagami is a top student and the son of a senior police official. Convinced the world is rotten, he finds a black notebook lying in the schoolyard one day - the cover reads 'Death Note,' and inside are instructions for its use. Anyone whose name is written in it dies, but only if the writer holds their face in mind. Write a cause of death and it happens that way; leave it blank and the person dies of a heart attack. Skeptical at first, Light tests it and learns it's real. A death god named Ryuk, who dropped the notebook, then appears and tells him that whoever picks up a fallen Death Note now owns it. Light decides he will judge criminals and become the god of a new world, pulling names from news reports and police databases and writing them down one by one. As violent criminals start dying of unexplained heart attacks, the world begins calling this unseen executioner Kira. An international task force hands the investigation to a detective known only as L, who never reveals his face or real name. Within a short time, L works out that inside police information is being used and, from the distribution of the killings' timing, narrows the culprit's location to the Kanto region of Japan, landing the first real blow on Light with a faked broadcast shown only within Japan. Under this lopsided condition - whoever learns the other's face and real name first wins, whoever's face and name are learned first loses - Light and L eventually end up seated side by side on the same task force, each trying to prove the other is exactly who he's hunting. Then a second person claiming to be Kira appears, and the whole board starts moving again.

How the story is built

  1. Setup

The night he found it, and the trap of a name

Volumes 1-3, first half of Part One

The Death Note's rules are laid out to the reader in full right at the start: write a name and the person dies; it doesn't work without knowing their face; cause and circumstances of death can be specified. That full disclosure means everything that follows isn't a contest of hidden powers - it's a battle over how to use rules both sides, and the reader, already understand, and how well each side can read the other's next move. Light begins purging criminals, and the public names this phenomenon Kira. L deduces that inside police information is being used, and from a bias in the timing of the killings, that the culprit is in the Kanto region of Japan; he flushes Light out with a fake broadcast shown only within Japan. Light takes the bait and falls into the trap, unwittingly confirming to L that he's in Kanto. What's established here is that this story's real battlefield is information leaks, not brute force. From this point, Light goes on to eliminate the FBI agents sent to investigate him, along with Naomi Misora, one agent's fiancee - showing he has no hesitation about killing people who aren't criminals at all.

  2. Development

A gamble on losing his own memory

Volumes 4-7, the Second Kira arc and the Yotsuba arc

A second self-proclaimed Kira, Misa Amane, appears. She has traded half her remaining lifespan for a death god's Eyes, which let her learn a person's name and remaining lifespan just by looking at their face. With an ally now able to identify names, the balance tips against Light, who until now had been the one whose name couldn't be learned. L detains Misa, and Light, to clear his own name, volunteers to be detained too. That's when Light makes his move: he gives up ownership of the notebook, which erases his memory of ever having it. Having relinquished it, Light genuinely believes he isn't Kira and joins the investigation in good faith. Meanwhile, the notebook passes to executives at the Yotsuba Group, and a third Kira begins killing people singled out in corporate meetings as inconvenient. With the man who had been the killer now working as a detective, the story creates, just this once, a stretch of time in which Light and L are truly cooperating. Once the Yotsuba case is resolved, Light touches the notebook again and his memory returns.

  3. Turn

L's death, and five years later

Volumes 7-10, first half of Part Two

To protect Misa Amane, the death god Rem writes the names of L and his aide Watari; both die of heart attacks. A death-god rule states that any death god who kills a human to extend that human's lifespan will itself die, and Rem is erased as a result. The events here are placed on November 5, 2004. This is the story's biggest reversal. The pursuer's central figure exits, and Light, taking the name 'L' as his successor, ends up at the head of the task force himself. Five years later, two successors raised at Wammy's House, the orphanage where L grew up, appear: Near and Mello. Near sets up an American anti-Kira task force called the SPK, while Mello moves independently through connections to the mafia. The story reshapes itself from a one-on-one between Light and L into a three-way struggle among Light, Near, and Mello. Mello kidnaps Light's sister to steal a Death Note, and in the course of that pursuit, Light's father Soichiro Yagami is shot by the mafia and dies - never learning that his own son is Kira.

  4. Resolution

    A proxy, and a warehouse

Volumes 10-12, second half of Part Two

Light stops writing names himself, installing a prosecutor named Teru Mikami as his proxy. Mikami worships Kira as a god and carries out the killings without ever learning Light's face. As a go-between, Light uses Kiyomi Takada, a TV newscaster and an old university acquaintance, as Kira's public spokesperson. Mello abducts Takada, but Takada kills him with a torn-off scrap of notebook page before Light burns her to death with his own notebook, leaving Mikami as Light's only remaining piece on the board. Near keeps close watch on Mikami's actions and, in secret, alters the notebook Mikami is using. The showdown is set in a warehouse. Light's plan is to have Mikami write down the names of Near and every member of the task force who shows up there, killing them all while he alone survives. Whether that final move actually works is where everything comes down to.

The ending

Open the ending (it is given away in full)

On January 28, 2010, within the story, Light, Near, the remaining Japanese task force, what's left of the SPK, and Teru Mikami all converge on the warehouse. Light's plan is for Mikami's notebook, already primed with everyone's names, to activate and kill Near and the entire task force. But the time by which the written names should have died comes and goes, and no one dies. The notebook Mikami is carrying has been swapped for a fake, copied overnight by Near's associate Giovanni. The real notebook still holds a record of every name Mikami transcribed into it - and Light Yagami's own name is conspicuously absent. Only one person could plausibly order everyone but Kira killed. Near uses that fact to declare Light is Kira. Cornered, Light stops denying it, admits he is Kira, and launches into a speech: that he is the one who judged this rotten world, that he is the god of the new one. Just as he moves to counterattack with a hidden scrap of notebook, Matsuda Touta shoots him four times - Matsuda, who was present when Light's father Soichiro died still believing in his son. Badly wounded, Light drags himself out of the warehouse and begs the death god Ryuk for help. Ryuk does exactly what he told Light he would do, back when they first met: he writes Light Yagami's name in his own Death Note. Light dies of a heart attack, portrayed as a miserable death, pleading for his life. But the story doesn't end there. About a year later, a scene shows people who still worship Kira gathering to pray for his return, and the story closes on that image - Kira himself is gone from the world, but the desire for a Kira hasn't disappeared. A rule repeated throughout the story holds that anyone who has used a Death Note can go to neither heaven nor hell. Among the other characters: L and Watari are killed by Rem, and Rem is erased by the death-god rule afterward. Mello is killed by Kiyomi Takada, who is in turn killed by Light. Soichiro Yagami is shot and killed while pursuing Mello. Near solves the case and inherits L's name. According to the English Wikipedia entry, in the manga Teru Mikami loses his sanity and dies in prison. Misa Amane's fate afterward is never stated in the main story.

Notes

A design built on revealing the rules, not hiding them

What sits at the center of this series is disclosure, not secrecy. The Death Note's rules are laid out to the reader right at the start, and every time a new rule comes to light - needing a name and a face, being able to specify cause and circumstances of death, losing your memory if you relinquish ownership, trading half your lifespan for a death god's Eyes - it's shared with the reader too. Readers track exactly what Light and L each know and don't know, watching to see which one reaches the other's information first. That structurally forecloses the standard battle-manga move of a new power showing up to flip the situation - outcomes are always decided by combinations of rules everyone already knows, and by who reads the other person's next step. This design is often cited as the reason a manga with no physical fighting at all could still succeed as a flagship serial in a boys' magazine.

An inverted structure with the hero as the perpetrator

The reader's point-of-view character is Light Yagami, who is killing people on a massive scale. L, the one hunting him, functionally occupies the position of the antagonist. Within the story, Light defines himself as the god of a new world and believes reducing crime is righteous - but he also kills, purely to avoid exposure, the FBI agents pursuing him and uninvolved bystanders who get too close to the truth. The work never affirms or condemns Light's reasoning outright; it simply accumulates, scene by scene, how far he's willing to go. Because of that, readers are made to want Light to win while simultaneously being shown exactly what that victory would mean. It's often read as a story about where righteous killing in the name of justice ends up, told from inside the perpetrator - one that keeps forcing the reader to choose, again and again, which side to root for.

How the ending has been received, and how it differs across adaptations

Opinion is split on how Light is portrayed at the very end. One reading treats his loss of composure, his begging for his life, and his humiliating death as the inevitable comeuppance for a man who claimed the mantle of justice; another argues that it breaks the perfectly controlled character he had been until then. That range shows up, too, in how differently his death has been staged across adaptations. In the manga, Light crawls out of the warehouse and is killed when Ryuk writes his name. In the anime, he escapes the warehouse, collapses on a staircase, and dies quietly while picturing L's face. In the live-action drama, Mikami sets the warehouse on fire, and Light dies engulfed in flames as he tries to crawl toward the notebook on the floor. Light dies in every version, but the meaning attached to his death is not the same. Going by the manga specifically, his end is drawn as thoroughly wretched.

What continued after serialization ended

The story's reach kept expanding after the manga finished. Shueisha released a single-volume complete edition collecting all 12 volumes in October 2016, and in February 2021, its first new release in fourteen and a half years, a Death Note short-story collection. That collection includes two standalone chapters, called the 'C-Kira' and 'a-Kira' stories, set in the world after Light's death. Worldwide print totals passed 30 million by 2015. The series has also spread across anime, live-action films, TV dramas, stage productions, and an overseas live-action adaptation - and not every one of those versions uses the manga's own ending. The structural trick of stating the rules openly and then out-thinking an opponent within them is widely credited as having become a template for cerebral thrillers that followed, and is often cited as a case where an unusually unconventional design for a shonen serial simply became the genre standard.

What we could not confirm

Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.

  • The exact issue numbers marking the break between Part One and Part Two. Japanese Wikipedia gives Part One as issue 1, 2004 through issue 11, 2005, and Part Two as issue 20, 2005 through issue 24, 2006, but a site cataloguing publication data states that page.61 ran in issue 13, 2005 before resuming in issue 20, 2005 - the discrepancy has not been resolved against a primary source
  • A discrepancy in the chapter count: the collected volumes total 108 chapters, but a site cataloguing publication data lists 111 installments. Whether the gap is made up of bonus chapters or one-shots has not been confirmed
  • The actual on-sale date of the final issue (issue 24, 2006): some sources give May 15, others give the issue's cover date as May 29; not confirmed against a primary source
  • The title of the final chapter, page.108. Shueisha's official page does not appear to list individual chapter titles
  • What became of Misa Amane. The final chapter shows the world after Light's death, but her death is never stated in the story itself. The official guidebook Death Note 13: How to Read is said to record a date of death for her, but that record has not been confirmed against a primary source
  • Teru Mikami's ultimate fate. English Wikipedia states that in the manga he loses his sanity and dies in prison, but this has not been corroborated by a Japanese-language source. That the anime has him stab himself with a pen also relies on the same single source
  • The exact sequence of Kiyomi Takada's and Mello's deaths. That Takada kills Mello with a torn scrap of notebook page and that Light burns Takada to death has been confirmed, but the dates and specific locations rely on the Japanese Wikipedia character articles and have not been cross-checked against another source
  • Whether Ryuk left the human world after killing Light could not be confirmed in any source checked
  • The most recent print total. No update to the 2015 figure of more than 30 million has been confirmed
  • In-story dates (the warehouse showdown on January 28, 2010; L's death on November 5, 2004; Soichiro Yagami's death on November 11, 2009) are based on the Japanese Wikipedia character articles; none have been confirmed as explicitly stated in the manga volumes themselves
