Synopsis
In a world where roughly 80% of the population has developed superhuman abilities called Quirks, heroes who stop villains and save people are licensed professionals ranked by their track record. Izuku Midoriya is one of the rare few born with no Quirk at all, Quirkless, in a society built around having one. He's dreamed of being a hero his whole life, and been told every step of the way that lacking power rules it out. Then he meets his idol, the Symbol of Peace, All Might. All Might tells him that his own power, One For All, is a Quirk passed down from person to person, and that the injury he took fighting the villain All For One has cut his hero career down to just a few hours a day, and chooses Izuku as its ninth successor. Izuku enrolls in the Hero Course at the prestigious U.A. High School, learning the trade through classes and field training alongside classmates like Katsuki Bakugo, Ochaco Uraraka, and Shoto Todoroki. Meanwhile, the League of Villains, led by Tomura Shigaraki, heir to All For One's will, starts moving against the Symbol of Peace. As incidents outside school keep pulling the students in, the fragility of a society built around the hero profession comes into view.

How the story is built
- Setup
A Quirkless boy inherits a power
Ch. 1-97, roughly vols. 1-11 / U.A. enrollment through the League of Villains' Kamino Ward raid
The opening act runs from Izuku, Quirkless, inheriting One For All from All Might, through his enrollment at U.A. It follows a school-story structure: the entrance exam, the Sports Festival, work-study placements, final exams, a training camp, student abilities and relationships get laid out along the shape of school events, with individual backstories (Izuku's rivalry with Bakugo, the Todoroki family situation, the incident involving Tenya Iida's brother) folded in along the way. At the same time, Izuku's body repeatedly breaking bones under a borrowed power it can't yet handle establishes early that inheriting One For All comes with a cost built in. This stage closes with the fight at Kamino Ward. Rescuing the kidnapped Bakugo, All Might fights All For One head-on, wins, and uses up the last of his power in the process, retiring on the spot. With the Symbol of Peace disappearing on live broadcast, the story shifts to problems that exist outside the school.
- Development
A society where hero is a profession
Ch. 98-252, roughly vols. 12-26 / the Provisional License Exam arc through the Endeavor Agency arc
How to fill the vacuum All Might leaves behind becomes this stage's subject. The students earn provisional licenses and start interning at pro agencies, taking on real cases. In the Shie Hassaikai arc, rescuing a girl named Eri costs Sir Nighteye his life, a concrete demonstration that this job kills people. In parallel, the story follows Endeavor, who takes over the No. 1 ranking: a man who reached the top through sheer strength while breaking his family, now trying to carry a symbolic role with that history still attached. The enemy side organizes too; Shigaraki absorbs the Meta Liberation Army to form the Paranormal Liberation Front, aiming not at individual heroes but at hero society itself. It's also revealed here that One For All carries the Quirks of six past holders, expanding the inheritance from a simple transfer of power into a system carrying the will of everyone who held it before.
- Turn
War, and a society coming apart
Ch. 253-342, roughly vols. 26-34 / the Paranormal Liberation War arc through the Traitor arc
Heroes strike first, raiding the Paranormal Liberation Front's base, and the operation falls apart. Heroes die too, Midnight among them, and Dabi reveals on nationwide live broadcast that he's actually Endeavor's eldest son, Toya Todoroki. From this fight on, the story's stage stops being the school or an incident site and becomes society itself. Prisons are broken open, shelters spring up everywhere, and distrust of heroes is spoken about openly. Izuku leaves U.A. and keeps moving alone to draw enemies hunting One For All away from everyone else, until his classmates drag him back after he's run himself down to nothing. Star and Stripe, America's strongest hero sent to help, is also killed by Shigaraki. It also comes out that U.A. has had a traitor inside it all along, Yuga Aoyama. This stage ends with the hero side building a final operation meant to split the enemy's forces.
- Resolution
The final battle, and eight years later
Ch. 343-430, vols. 34-42 / the Final Act arc and epilogue
The operation splits the battlefield into several fronts, letting multiple long-running conflicts resolve at once: Shoto Todoroki against Dabi, Ochaco Uraraka against Himiko Toga, Katsuki Bakugo against All For One, Izuku Midoriya against Tomura Shigaraki. Most of this stretch is spent on these parallel resolutions, with more attention paid to what each side manages to say to the other than to who wins. Izuku's fight with Shigaraki is written as a fight to reach Tenko Shimura, the child still left inside him, and the cost of that fight is Izuku giving up One For All. A handful of epilogue chapters follow, and the final chapter jumps eight years forward. The last print volume, 42, adds a new 38-page chapter, 431, 'More,' continuing the story past that point. Together, the series finale and that added chapter are where the story actually lands.
The ending
Open the ending (it is given away in full)
The final battle plays out as several simultaneous endings across different battlefields. Katsuki Bakugo's heart stops once, but Edgeshot stitches him back together and revives him; Bakugo works out the mechanics of his own Explosion Quirk and uses it to shatter All For One's body. All For One, having used his own rewind drug on himself, ages backward all the way to a fertilized egg and disappears. Shoto Todoroki stops Dabi with a new technique, and the rest of the Todoroki family arrives to cool his nearly burned-out body; Dabi survives, barely. Ochaco Uraraka faces down Himiko Toga, who gives Ochaco a transfusion past the point her own body can take, and dies to save her. Stain, after saving All Might, is killed by All For One. Izuku Midoriya and Tomura Shigaraki's fight is decided by one last strike, sending what's left of One For All into Shigaraki. Every past holder of the power destroys All For One's consciousness from inside him, and Shigaraki gets his own self back as Tenko Shimura. Admitting he never managed to destroy anything, he hands Izuku a message for Spinner and turns to ash. As a consequence, Izuku loses One For All. What was left of the power fades out completely by the time he graduates U.A., and he's Quirkless again. The final chapter jumps eight years ahead. Izuku is now a teacher at U.A. Because the number of villain incidents has actually dropped, hero work has expanded beyond fighting into things like Quirk counseling and community support; Ochaco Uraraka is leading that expansion of counseling services, and Mezo Shoji has won the Imamura Peace Prize for reducing discrimination against people with mutant-type Quirks. Lemillion tops the Hero Billboard Chart. Bakugo has regained full range of motion in his arm through rehab, and Mei Hatsume runs her own design firm. Then an aged All Might comes to visit Izuku, bringing a support-item suit funded by their old Class A classmates and built by Hatsume and Melissa Shield. Izuku puts it on and goes back into the field, and the main series ends on the whole of Class A standing together as heroes. Volume 42 adds a 38-page epilogue chapter as chapter 431, 'More,' and a TV anime special adapting it aired May 2, 2026.
Notes
Quirks as an engine of inequality
About 80% of this world's population has a Quirk. Quirks are inborn, inherited from parents, and can't be chosen or changed later. That setup is the foundation for the power fights, but it's also used as a machine for social inequality. Izuku, Quirkless, gets his path closed off before it starts; Bakugo, with a flashy explosion Quirk, is treated as gifted from early childhood without question. Shoto Todoroki was born from a marriage his parents arranged specifically to produce a child with a strong Quirk. People with mutant-type bodies are shown facing discrimination, feeding into the late-series arc where Shoji works to reduce it. Many villains, too, carry backstories of losing their place in the world because of their Quirk. Combined with heroism being a licensed profession, this is a society designed to tie inborn ability directly to job and status. What the story keeps coming back to is the question of what happens to the people that system fails to catch.
The structure of retiring the Symbol of Peace early
The series retires its strongest hero, All Might, relatively early, around chapter 97, volume 11. Taking the strongest ally off the board that soon is unusual for shonen manga, and it's what shapes everything that follows. All Might's absence opens up a gap that rank and institution can't fill, and the middle of the story is built around that gap. Endeavor inheriting the No. 1 spot, and Izuku inheriting his mentor's power without being able to become his mentor, both depend on that retirement having already happened. The very premise of One For All, that power belongs to no one permanently and gets passed on, makes the changing of the symbol part of the story's actual theme. Izuku landing, in the final chapter, in a hero's position while Quirkless is generally read as an extension of that same line.
Saving the enemy, as a theme, and how it lands
In its back half, the story shifts its weight from beating the enemy to failing to save the enemy. Tomura Shigaraki is Tenko Shimura, a child whose broken home never let a hero reach him, and Izuku's final fight with him is written as a fight to reach him, not to kill him. Himiko Toga and Ochaco Uraraka, and Dabi and the Todoroki family, are laid out the same way. The result: Shigaraki gets his sense of self back before disappearing, Toga dies saving Ochaco, and Dabi survives, barely, taken in by his family. How that lands has drawn some pushback from readers, that the number of people actually saved doesn't match up with the amount of wanting-to-save on the page, or that the underlying social problems never get solved institutionally. There's a counter-reading too: that depicting the failure to reach someone is itself the point. Both are reader and critic interpretation; the story doesn't state a conclusion either way.
A love letter back to American comics
This is a series often discussed as having grown more overseas than at home. Of the roughly 100 million copies in worldwide circulation as of April 2024, about 40 million are overseas. A society where heroism is a licensed profession, a large ensemble cast instead of one lead, costumes and codenames, these read as American superhero-comics vocabulary translated into the grammar of Japanese school and club-activity stories. Kohei Horikoshi has spoken openly about being influenced by American comics, and collaboration art with Marvel Comics artists was released to mark the release of the final volume 42. In 2018, Legendary Pictures announced a live-action Hollywood adaptation. It's generally positioned as a case of Japanese shonen manga taking on American-comics material and sending it back home.

What we could not confirm
Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.
- The precise mapping between arcs and volume numbers (exactly which chapters fall in which volume) could not be confirmed from a primary source. The chapter ranges given in structure's span fields are totaled from a fan-run database (the My Hero Academia Wiki)'s arc-by-chapter breakdown; the volume numbers are estimates based on the handful of chapter-to-volume mappings that are confirmed.
- No updated cumulative print-run figure beyond the 100-million-copies-worldwide announcement from April 2024 could be confirmed.
- The specific content of final volume 42's 38-page new chapter (431, 'More') could only be confirmed to the extent covered by write-ups introducing the anime special. A claim in one aggregator article that Dabi (Toya Todoroki) is deceased by the eight-years-later point was found in only that one source and has not been used in the main text.
- English Wikipedia has a note about Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka's relationship after the finale, but it could not be corroborated in Japanese-language sources, so it is not included here.
- Any progress on the Legendary Pictures live-action film beyond its 2018 announcement, director, cast, release timing, could not be confirmed.
- No review coverage from major outlets about how the finale was received could be confirmed. The reader reactions described in commentary are based on points that recur repeatedly across personal blogs and aggregator sites.
- The pairing of the original publication issue (2014, No. 32) with its release date (July 7, 2014) comes from cross-referencing Japanese and English Wikipedia; it has not been confirmed against a Shueisha announcement.
- This file's ending field is written as the brief specifies. Note: the repository's actual content schema (src/content/netabare) requires ending to be an object with status and body fields, so a conversion adding status: complete will be needed at ingestion time.
